When Is My MOT Due? The Short Answer
Your MOT is due on the expiry date printed on your current certificate. For a brand new vehicle, it is due by the third anniversary of its registration. As of November 2026, GOV.UK states that after the first test the next MOT is due by the anniversary of the last one.
Important
The legal deadline is the expiry date, not the day you happen to book. Find that one date and everything else on this page follows from it.

The Two Dates That Decide Everything
Every MOT deadline comes from one of two dates, as the list below shows:
Never tested before
The deadline comes from the date of first registration.
Tested before
The deadline is the expiry date of the last certificate.
If you know which of the two applies to you, you can work out your deadline in about a minute.
Pro Tip
Write both dates on one line in your phone notes: "registered on" and "MOT expires on". You will only ever need one of them at a time.
Where The "MOT" Name Comes From
MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, the old government department that introduced the test. Several bodies are involved today:
- DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency): oversees the test in Great Britain.
- DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency): holds the vehicle record.
- DVA (Driver and Vehicle Agency): runs testing in Northern Ireland.
This page is independent and is not affiliated with any of them.
How Do I Check When My MOT Is Due?
You can check your MOT due date for free with the vehicle's registration number, using the lookup tool at the top of this page or the official GOV.UK service. Your paper certificate and any reminder text or email also show the date.
There are four ways to find it:
- Use the lookup tool on this page.
- Use the GOV.UK "check MOT status" service.
- Read your MOT certificate.
- Look at a reminder message.
Pro Tip
If two sources disagree, trust the official GOV.UK record and then check your latest certificate.
Method 1: Use The Lookup Tool On This Page
Enter the registration number into the tool above the introduction. It reads the public MOT record and shows the expiry date. It then works out the earliest day you can test without losing time.
It takes a few seconds and needs no account.
Method 2: Use The GOV.UK "Check MOT Status" Service
GOV.UK states that its service shows "if a vehicle has an MOT certificate and when it runs out", and that you need the vehicle's registration number. It is the official source, so use it if you want to cross-check anything you see elsewhere.
For a deeper look at past results, our MOT history check guide explains what the record contains.
Method 3: Read Your MOT Certificate
Your latest certificate shows an expiry date. If you have a paper copy, it is the quickest check. Certificates are also available online, which our MOT certificate page covers, including what to do if yours is lost.
Note
A certificate only shows the date of your most recent pass. If you have tested again since, an older copy will be out of date.
Method 4: Look At A Reminder Message
If you have signed up for a reminder, the text or email you receive about a month before expiry states the date. A reminder is a convenience, not a legal duty on anyone, so keep the date somewhere you will see it.
What Do You Need To Look Up An MOT Due Date?
You only need the vehicle's registration number (the number plate). You do not need any of the following to see the expiry date of a vehicle that already has an MOT record:
- The V5C logbook.
- The owner's name.
- The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
Pro Tip
Copy the plate exactly as shown on the car. A zero typed for the letter O is the most common reason a lookup fails.
Why The Registration Number Is Enough
MOT results are linked to the registration number in a public record. That is why you can check a friend's car, a car you are about to buy, or a fleet vehicle without any personal details. The record shows test outcomes, not the owner.
When A Lookup Will Not Work
A lookup shows nothing useful in these cases:
- The vehicle has never had an MOT.
- You mistyped the plate.
- The car was recently imported and not yet registered.
A very new car will not have a test result either, which is normal. See the first-MOT section below.
Why Does The Due Date Matter So Much?
The due date matters for three reasons:
- Driving or parking on the road after the MOT has run out is an offence unless a narrow exception applies.
- You cannot renew vehicle tax without a valid MOT.
- Missing it costs time, money and insurance protection.
Warning
An MOT that has run out can leave you facing prosecution, a fine, a tax problem and an insurance headache all at once.
Legal Consequences In Brief
GOV.UK states you cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out, you can be prosecuted, and you can be fined up to £1,000. The full legal picture, including insurance and enforcement, belongs to our page on MOT rules and exemptions.
Practical Consequences
Even before the law is involved, an expired MOT has real costs:
- A gap with no safe-to-drive check.
- Difficulty taxing the car.
- Last-minute test slots at whatever price is available.
People who track the date early usually pay less and get a better choice of garage.
What Is The MOT Expiry Date And Where Does It Come From?
The MOT expiry date is the last day your current certificate is valid. It is set when the vehicle passes its test. It is one of two dates:
- One year minus a day from the pass, if you tested earlier than the window.
- The previous certificate's anniversary, if you tested within the early window.
Expiry Versus Due Date
People use "MOT due" and "MOT expiry" interchangeably. In practice they mean the same day: the last date you can legally use the road without a fresh pass.
Some people read "due" as "I should book now", which is sensible. But the legal deadline is the expiry.
Why It Is One Year Minus A Day
A pass on 14 April 2026 gives an expiry of 13 April 2027, not 14 April. The day is subtracted so the certificate covers exactly twelve months.
Worked example
You pass on 3 June 2026. Your certificate runs out on 2 June 2027, so set the diary alert for 2 June, not 3 June.
Remember this when you set diary alerts, because "the same date next year" would be a day late.
When Is The First MOT Due On A New Car?
A new car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration date. GOV.UK states the vehicle must have its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, not three years from the date you bought it.
Important
The three-year clock starts at first registration, never at the purchase date.
Registration Date, Not Purchase Date
The registration date is on the V5C (the vehicle registration certificate, often called the logbook). A car bought as a "new" three-month-old demonstrator still counts from the original registration.
Worked example
A car registered on 12 March 2024 needs its first MOT by 12 March 2027.
What "New Car" Means For MOT Purposes
A brand new car is not tested for three years because modern vehicles are assumed to be in good order early on. They are still legally required to be roadworthy.
Tyres, lights and brakes can fail well before the first test, so treat "no MOT yet" as "no inspection yet".
Warning
Having no MOT yet does not make an unsafe car legal. A worn tyre or faulty light can still lead to a penalty.
Which Vehicles Are Tested Sooner Than Three Years
GOV.UK states some vehicles must be tested at one year old and points to the MOT fees table for which. Examples depend on class and use, so check the official table rather than assuming. Our motorcycles, vans and EVs page covers class-specific rules.
Does A Nearly New Used Car Already Have An MOT?
The age of the car tells you what to expect:
Under three years
Normally no MOT yet, because none has been required.
Older than three years
Should have a current certificate.
Either way, check its expiry before you buy.
Buying A Car Close To Its First Test
If the car is two years and ten months old, its first MOT is only two months away. That is a negotiating point, and the cost of the test falls on you, so budget for it. See how to book an MOT for what to expect.
Checking Before You Hand Over Money
Run the registration through the lookup tool, then compare the expiry with what the seller tells you. If the seller says "it has twelve months" and the record shows three, you want to know before the sale.
Pro Tip
Screenshot the record on the day you view the car. It gives you something concrete to point to if the seller's story changes.
Our MOT and tax check page explains the tax side of a purchase.
How Early Can You Get An MOT?
You can take an MOT up to a month minus a day before it expires and keep the same renewal date. GOV.UK gives the example that if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep that date is 16 April.
Important
Test inside this window and you lose nothing. Test before it and you lose days.
Inside the window
Test from a month minus a day before expiry and the renewal date is kept.
Before the window
The new expiry becomes one year minus a day from the pass, so unused days are lost.

The One-Month-Minus-A-Day Rule In Plain Terms
Work out your earliest "safe" test date in three moves:
- Take your expiry date. Start from the date on your certificate.
- Go back one calendar month. Count back to the same day of the previous month.
- Add one day. That is the first day of the window.
A test on that day or any day up to the expiry preserves the renewal date, so the new certificate runs on from the old one.
A Worked Example
Worked example
Your MOT expires on 20 December 2026. The window opens on 21 November 2026. A pass on 25 November gives a new expiry of 20 December 2027, so you lose nothing by testing five weeks before the old date.
Why The Window Exists
The window lets you test with margin for repairs. If the car fails on day one of the window, you still have around a month to fix it and retest while the old certificate is valid. That safety margin is the main practical benefit.
What Happens If You Get An MOT More Than A Month Early?
If you test earlier than the window, the pass still counts. The new expiry becomes one year minus a day from the date you passed. You lose the unused days from the old certificate.
Warning
Testing too early quietly shortens your cover. The days you give up are not added back later.
The GOV.UK Worked Example
GOV.UK states the following:
- Old expiry: 15 May.
- Pass date: 14 April, which is before the window opens.
- New expiry: 13 April the following year.
The one month of earlier time is simply forgotten.
How Much You Lose In Real Life
Worked example
Expiry 20 December 2026, but you test on 1 November. Your new expiry is 31 October 2027, about seven weeks earlier than the 20 December 2027 you would have kept by waiting.
Over the car's life those lost weeks add up to an extra test eventually.
When Early Testing Is Still Sensible
An early test can be worth the lost days in a few situations:
- The car is due to be off the road.
- You are about to go abroad for a long trip.
- The garage can only offer a slot weeks before the window.
Weigh the cost of a lost few weeks against the inconvenience.
Can I Drive On The Day My MOT Expires?
Yes, you can drive on the expiry date itself, because the certificate is valid until the end of that day. From the following day you may not drive or park on the road without a valid MOT, apart from the narrow exceptions GOV.UK lists.
The Expiry Date Is The Last Valid Day
If the certificate says 13 April 2027, the timeline works like this:
13 April
You can use the car all day.
14 April
A test booked for this date is already a day late, unless it counts as a pre-arranged test journey.
Plan to test comfortably before the final day.
Note
"Valid until the end of the day" does not make the last day a safe plan. It only means you are still covered if something goes wrong early in the day.
Why Last-Day Plans Are Risky
Three things can go wrong on the final day:
- A slot you rely on can be cancelled.
- A pass can turn into a fail.
- A car that fails with a dangerous defect should not be driven at all.
Treat the final day as a fallback, not a plan.
Why Not Leave The MOT Until The Last Day?
Waiting until the last day leaves no room to repair a failure. A car that fails with a dangerous defect may not be legally driveable even if the old certificate is still valid. Giving yourself the full month avoids that squeeze.
Test in the first half
You keep the renewal date and have about two weeks to repair and retest.
Wait for the last day
A fail leaves no room to repair, and a dangerous defect may stop you driving at all.
Pro Tip
Aim for the first half of the window. If it fails, you still have about two weeks to repair and retest.
Time For Repairs And Parts
Parts such as tyres, bulbs or brake components can be quick to source. A corroded sill or a worn suspension joint may take days. A month of runway turns a panic into a routine job.
Better Prices And Slots
Garages fill up around month-end and just before holidays. Booking within the early window gives you choice, and our guide to booking an MOT covers how to compare local offers without paying for extras you do not need.
How Do MOT Reminders Work?
GOV.UK offers a free MOT reminder by text message or email. As of November 2026, it states that owners of cars, vans and motorcycles get the reminder one month before the MOT is due.
Pro Tip
Sign up the day you pass your MOT. The reminder then covers you for the whole of the next year.
What You Need To Sign Up
According to GOV.UK, you need two things:
- The vehicle's registration number.
- Either a mobile number or an email address.
You do not need to create an account, and the reminder service is free. It is run through the official reminder page, so always begin from GOV.UK rather than a search advert.
How Far Ahead The Reminder Arrives
GOV.UK gives these notice periods:
Cars, vans and motorcycles
The reminder arrives one month before the due date.
Lorries, buses and large trailers
The reminder arrives two months before.
A one-month notice is the same length as the early-test window, so the message arrives just as you can test without losing time.
Note
Because the reminder lands as the window opens, you can book straight away without losing any days.
Reminders In Northern Ireland
GOV.UK states the online service cannot be used by people living in Northern Ireland, who instead get a reminder by post seven weeks before the MOT is due. See our Northern Ireland MOT page for the DVA scheme.
Is The GOV.UK MOT Reminder Reliable Enough To Depend On?
The reminder is a helpful prompt, but it is not a guarantee, so keep your own record of the date. A mistyped phone number, a full inbox or a changed address can all stop the message arriving.
Warning
If the reminder never arrives, you are still responsible for the date. "I did not get a text" is not a defence.
Common Reasons A Reminder Never Arrives
- The mobile number or email was entered incorrectly.
- The message went to junk or spam.
- The vehicle was sold and the previous keeper's reminder still goes to them.
- You signed up for a different registration after a plate change.
A Simple Double-Check Habit
Whenever you pass an MOT, put the new expiry in a calendar, with an alert at six weeks. Treat the official reminder as the second layer, not the first.
Pro Tip
Set the calendar entry for the day before the expiry as well, as a final safety net.
How Do I Set Up An MOT Reminder?
Open the GOV.UK reminder service, enter the registration number, choose text or email, and give your contact detail. You can finish in a couple of minutes.

Step By Step
- Go to the GOV.UK MOT reminder page. Start from the official site, not an advert.
- Enter the registration number. Type it exactly as it appears on the plate.
- Choose text message or email. Pick whichever you check most often.
- Enter your mobile number or email address. Double-check every digit or letter.
- Confirm and keep any confirmation message. You will want it if a reminder goes missing.
What To Check After Signing Up
Make sure the confirmation arrives. If you get no confirmation, retype the contact detail. A reminder set up for the wrong vehicle is easy to miss, so check the plate before you submit.
Important
Do not submit until you have re-read the registration. One wrong character sends the reminder to a different vehicle's record.
How Do I View Or Stop MOT Reminders?
You can view or stop reminders through GOV.UK using the vehicle's registration number and the email address or mobile number you signed up with. You can also unsubscribe from a text or email directly.
Stopping A Reminder By Text Or Email
GOV.UK states you can follow the instructions in a text or use the unsubscribe link in an email. Unsubscribing by text is charged at your standard message rate, according to the same page.
Note
If you would rather not pay for a text, unsubscribe through the GOV.UK service or use the email link instead.
When You Must Stop A Reminder
GOV.UK says you must unsubscribe if you have any of the following:
- Sold the vehicle.
- Transferred it.
- Scrapped it or had it written off.
- Registered it as off the road.
That prevents the next keeper receiving messages meant for you, and it avoids confusion about who is responsible for the test.
Are There Paid MOT Reminder Services?
Yes, many garages and apps offer their own reminders. They can be useful, but the official GOV.UK service is free, so there is rarely a reason to pay for the reminder alone.
Official GOV.UK reminder
It is free and comes from the official source.
Garage or app reminder
It is not an official notice, and the date may come from the garage's own database.
What Garage Reminders Usually Include
A garage reminder often has these features:
- It combines the MOT date with a service offer.
- It is not an official notice.
- The date may come from the garage's own database.
Cross-check it with the lookup tool or GOV.UK before you rely on it.
Why To Be Cautious Of Marketing Messages
An unsolicited text claiming "your MOT is overdue" might be genuine, or it might be a marketing or phishing attempt. Never click a link in a message to pay a fee. Go to GOV.UK or your own garage directly.
Warning
Do not enter card details through a link in an unexpected text. The official MOT reminder never asks for payment.
Our booking guide lists signs of upselling.
What If My MOT Reminder Says One Date And The Record Says Another?
Trust the official MOT record over a reminder if they disagree, and then check your certificate. Differences usually come from an early test that moved the expiry or from a reminder set for a previous vehicle.
Likely Explanations
- You tested early, so the expiry moved to a year minus a day from the pass date.
- A reminder was created before the latest test.
- A different registration is linked to your contact detail.
- A previous keeper's reminder is still active.
How To Resolve It
Work through these steps:
- Check the registration the reminder refers to.
- Read your latest certificate for the expiry date.
- View the vehicle's record on the lookup tool or GOV.UK.
- Ask the test station that issued the certificate if the record looks wrong.
Our certificate page explains how errors are corrected.
Pro Tip
Until the difference is explained, plan around the earlier of the two dates.
How Do I Calculate My MOT Due Date Myself?
Take the expiry date on your current certificate. That is your deadline. To find the earliest date that keeps your renewal date, subtract one month and add one day.

The Calculation In Three Lines
- Find the expiry date, for example 20 December 2026.
- Go back one calendar month to 20 November 2026.
- Add one day to give 21 November 2026, the first day of the window.
A Worked Example For A Pass
Worked example
You pass on 21 November 2026 with an old expiry of 20 December 2026. The new expiry is 20 December 2027. If you had passed on 20 November, the new expiry would have been 19 November 2027.
Dates At The End Of A Month
Months have different lengths, so an expiry at the end of a month can be awkward. Check the answer with the lookup tool or the test station.
Note
When you cannot tell, test a few days later and avoid risking the renewal date.
How Do I Work Out The Due Date For A Brand New Car?
Find the registration date on the V5C and add three years. The first MOT is due by that third anniversary, and you can test in the month before.
Example For A 2024 Registration
Worked example
A hatchback registered on 12 March 2024 has its third anniversary on 12 March 2027. Treat 12 March 2027 as the deadline, and plan to test from February onwards.
Why The V5C Date Matters
The registration date on the V5C is the date the car was first registered. Remember these points:
- It may be before the date you took ownership.
- Some cars were registered months before they were sold.
- Always use the V5C, not the invoice date.
Important
Check the V5C itself, not the sales invoice or the delivery date. They can be months apart.
Applying The Early Window To A First MOT
We read GOV.UK's early-test guidance as applying the same one-month window to a first MOT. If your first test falls near a deadline, confirm the earliest date with the test station before relying on it.
What Happens To My MOT Date After A Pass?
After a pass, the new certificate runs for one year minus a day. Where it starts depends on when you tested:
Within the early window
The new certificate starts from the old expiry date.
Earlier than the window
The new certificate starts from the date of the pass.
A Pass Inside The Window
The old expiry date steps forward by a year. This is the usual, tidy outcome and the reason people book in the final month.
A Pass Outside The Window
The date resets. This is not a penalty, but it does shorten your effective cover. See the earlier explanation about the lost weeks.
Note
A reset is not wrong or unfair. It simply means your annual date moves earlier.
What Happens To My MOT Date If The Car Fails?
If the car fails, your old certificate keeps its expiry date, and that date does not change. The new date only comes from a pass, so a fail does not give you extra time.
Important
A fail never extends your MOT. Only a pass sets a new expiry.
Fail inside the window
Repair and retest before the old expiry, and the renewal date is preserved.
Fail after expiry
You have no valid MOT. Driving to or from a repair or a pre-arranged test is allowed, but the vehicle must be roadworthy.
Failing Inside The Window
You still have the remainder of the month:
- Repair and retest before the old expiry.
- The renewal date is preserved.
The failure and retest rules are covered on our failures and advisories page.
Failing After Expiry
If the old certificate has run out when the car fails, you have no valid MOT. GOV.UK lists driving to or from a repair or to a pre-arranged test as exceptions, but the vehicle must still be roadworthy.
Can I Change My MOT Date?
You cannot choose or move an MOT expiry date directly. The date changes only when the vehicle passes a new test, and it is set by the rules on early and normal testing.
What "Changing The Date" Really Means
People searching for "change MOT date" usually want one of two things:
Move the test appointment
This is a booking matter.
Shift the annual renewal date
This happens only through the timing of a pass, to a more convenient month.
Moving Your Appointment
Contact the test station, and give as much notice as possible. See how to book an MOT for what to do when plans change.
Pro Tip
Rebook rather than cancel, so you do not lose your place inside the window.
Can I Shift My MOT To A Different Time Of Year?
Yes, but only by passing a test earlier than the early window, which resets the expiry from the pass date. You lose the unused days in return for a new annual date.
Why People Want To Move The Date
Reasons to move the date include:
- The MOT, tax and insurance all fall in the same month.
- You want to spread the cost and reduce the yearly squeeze on your budget.
The Cost Of Moving It
You lose the days between the early test date and the old expiry. Whether that is worth it depends on the car and the cost of the test, so weigh it against the convenience.
Worked example
If your MOT expires in December and you want a spring date, a pass in April sets the new expiry to March the following year. You give up the months between April and the old December date.
What Happens If My MOT Has Expired?
If your MOT has run out, you cannot drive or park the vehicle on the road. GOV.UK states:
- You can be prosecuted.
- You can be fined up to £1,000.
- There are exceptions for driving to a repair or to a pre-arranged MOT test.
Warning
Every day on the road without a valid MOT adds risk. Insurance, tax and prosecution all become harder to deal with the longer you wait.

Your Options Straight Away
You have three sensible choices:
- Get the vehicle tested.
- Repair it and then test it.
- Keep it off the road.
Each has different rules, which the sections below explain. Do not drive it for convenience in the meantime.
How Long A Lapsed MOT Matters
A lapse of one day is legally the same as a lapse of three months, but practical consequences grow. These all become harder to deal with the longer the gap lasts:
- Insurance
- Tax
- Possible prosecution
Detailed penalties are on our rules and exemptions page.
Is There A Grace Period After My MOT Expires?
No. GOV.UK does not mention a grace period, and the only allowances are for driving to or from a repair and to a pre-arranged MOT test. Once the certificate has run out, the vehicle is without an MOT.
Important
There is no extra time after expiry. The rule applies from the day after the last valid day.
Why "Grace Period" Is A Myth
Searches for "MOT expiry grace period" are common, but there is no extra time after expiry.
Before expiry
You have the month of the early-test window.
After the last valid day
The rule applies at once, with no extra time.
Where The Idea Comes From
Some people confuse the early window with a grace period, or remember that police sometimes use discretion. Discretion is not a right. Do not plan around it.
Can I Drive To An MOT Test If Mine Has Expired?
Yes, but only to a pre-arranged MOT test, and the vehicle must be roadworthy. GOV.UK lists driving to a pre-arranged test as an exception to the rule that you cannot drive without a valid MOT.
Note
The exception covers the journey to the test. It does not make an unsafe vehicle legal to drive.
What "Pre-Arranged" Means
The booking must exist before the journey. Keep any of these:
- The confirmation email.
- The text message.
- The booking reference.
If you are stopped, being able to show the appointment matters.
The Direct-Route Principle
The exception covers the journey to the test. Detours for shopping or school runs do not qualify. If the car fails and you need repairs, the exception for driving to a place of repair applies, but the car should not be dangerous.
Covered
A direct journey to the booked test, and a journey to a place of repair if the car is safe.
Not covered
Detours for shopping or school runs, and driving a dangerous vehicle.
Pro Tip
Before you set off, check that the booking confirmation shows the date, time and garage address.
A Practical Example
Worked example
Your MOT expired on Monday, you booked a Wednesday 10am slot on Tuesday, and you drive straight to the garage. That is the type of journey the exception exists for. Driving to a friend's house on Tuesday evening is not.
Can I Drive Home After An MOT Failure?
You may drive to or from a place of repair, but only if the vehicle is safe to do so. If the failure includes a dangerous defect, you should not drive it at all.
Warning
A dangerous defect means the car should stay where it is. Arrange recovery or a repair on site instead.
Old MOT Still Valid
If the old MOT has not expired when the car fails, you can usually continue to use it, unless the test found a dangerous defect. Check the failure categories on our failures and advisories page.
Old MOT Already Expired
Then you rely on the repair exception. Keep the journey direct and short, and keep any evidence of the booking or the repairer's address.
What If My MOT Expires Today?
If it expires today, you can still drive today. From tomorrow you may not drive or park on the road without a valid MOT, except for the two listed exceptions.
Today
You can still drive today, because the last valid day is the expiry date.
From tomorrow
You may not drive or park on the road without a valid MOT, apart from the two exceptions.
Tomorrow Morning
Questions like "if my MOT expires tomorrow, can I drive it tomorrow?" have a clear answer. The last valid day is the expiry date shown, so tomorrow would be after expiry if the date is today.
What To Do Now
- Phone a test station and ask for the earliest slot.
- If you cannot be tested in time, keep the car parked off the road.
- Or arrange a pre-arranged appointment so that the journey is covered.
Pro Tip
Ask for a cancellation slot. Many garages can fit you in at short notice.
What If My MOT Expired Months Ago?
You must get the vehicle tested before you can use it on the road again. The vehicle cannot be taxed without a valid MOT, and a long-expired MOT gives you the same legal position as a short one.
Expired 3 Months Ago
Worked example
An MOT expired three months ago and the car has been on a driveway, taxed. If it is on a private drive, you can leave it there. To move it on the road, you need a pre-arranged test, a repair appointment or a valid certificate.
Check Tax And SORN Status Too
An expired MOT often goes with lapsed tax or a missing SORN. Our MOT and tax check page explains how to check both together.
Note
Fixing the MOT alone may not be enough. Check the tax and SORN position at the same time.
Can I Park An Untested Car On The Road?
No. GOV.UK states you cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. Parking on private land such as your own drive is a different matter.
Private land
A car on your own drive is not on the road, so you can leave it there.
On the road
You cannot drive or park an untested car on a public road.
What Counts As "The Road"
The rule concerns public roads. A car on a private driveway is not on the road. Be aware of local rules and any shared access.
If You Cannot Test It Yet
Keep it on private land until you can test it. If it must be on the road, a valid MOT is needed, or a registered off-road status may be relevant. See the SORN section below.
Warning
Leaving an untested car at the kerb can lead to a fine, even if you are not driving it.
Can I Tax A Car Without An MOT?
No. GOV.UK states you cannot renew vehicle tax without a valid MOT, where an MOT is required. If the tax is also about to run out, you can register the vehicle as off the road with a SORN.
Important
The MOT comes first, then the tax. You cannot reverse the order.
What SORN Means
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It has two key features:
- It tells the DVLA the vehicle is not being used or kept on the road.
- It does not replace the need for an MOT if you later want to drive again.
Timing Your MOT And Tax Together
Test the car in the early window and renew the tax straight away. That is the cleanest route. Detail on tax, SORN and VED (vehicle excise duty) is on our MOT and tax page.
Does My Insurance Stay Valid With An Expired MOT?
Not necessarily. Many insurers say that an expired MOT can affect cover, and some policies treat it as a breach of conditions. Check your own policy wording and ask your insurer, rather than assuming either way.
Warning
If an accident happens without a valid MOT, a claim may be scrutinised or challenged. The effect depends on the policy.
Why Insurers Care
An MOT is evidence that the vehicle met the minimum standard at the test date. If an accident follows and the car has no MOT:
- An insurer may look closely at the claim.
- The effect depends on the policy and the circumstances.
What To Do
- Read the policy wording on roadworthiness.
- Ask in writing if unsure.
- Do not rely on a forum post.
For the legal side, see MOT rules and exemptions.
What If I Was Driving To A Test And Got Stopped?
Show the booking evidence and explain the purpose of the journey. The exception exists for exactly this, but you should be able to prove it.
Evidence To Keep
- The booking confirmation (email, text or screenshot).
- The garage's name and address.
- The route that makes sense for the journey.
Pro Tip
Save a screenshot of the booking to your phone before you set off, in case you lose signal.
Why Honesty And Speed Matter
Do not stretch the journey. A direct route to a booked test is easy to defend, a detour is not.
How Does An MOT From Northern Ireland Affect The Date In Great Britain?
GOV.UK states that different rules apply if your last MOT was in Northern Ireland and your next test is in Great Britain. Check the current guidance before testing if you have moved a vehicle between the two.
Great Britain
Testing is overseen by the DVSA, with guidance on GOV.UK.
Northern Ireland
Testing is run by the DVA, with its own first-test age and fees.
Why The Schemes Differ
Northern Ireland has its own test authority, the DVA. The details of first-test age and fees differ from Great Britain, so do not assume a certificate behaves the same way. Our Northern Ireland page covers the DVA scheme.
Read the Northern Ireland guide
What To Do When Moving A Car
- Ask the test station which dates apply.
- Check GOV.UK on the day.
- Keep the old certificate to hand.
Note
Rules can change, so confirm with GOV.UK rather than relying on an older source.
Do All Vehicles Follow The Same MOT Due-Date Rules?
No. Most cars, vans and motorcycles follow the rule of first test at three years and annual tests after. Some vehicles must be tested at one year, some are exempt, and some have different classes.
Vehicles Tested At One Year
GOV.UK states some vehicles must be tested at one year old and refers readers to the MOT fees table. Check it for your vehicle type rather than relying on general advice.
Exempt Vehicles
Certain vehicles do not need an MOT at all. The rules are covered on our exemptions page, and the class-specific rules on motorcycles, vans and EVs.
Pro Tip
Look up your exact vehicle class on GOV.UK first. It saves you working to the wrong date.
What Are The Common Myths About MOT Due Dates?
The most common myths are that there is a grace period, that you can test any time without losing days, and that the garage sets your date. None of these is correct.
Myth
"I have 14 days after expiry", or "testing early never costs anything".
Fact
There is no grace period, and testing earlier than the window resets the date.
Myth: "I Have 14 Days After Expiry"
There is no such period. The rule is in force from the day after expiry.
Myth: "Testing Early Never Costs Anything"
Testing earlier than a month minus a day before expiry resets the date, so you lose days.
Myth: "The Reminder Is The Law"
A reminder is a convenience. Responsibility rests with the keeper.
Myth: "A New Car Has Three Years From Purchase"
The clock starts at first registration, not at purchase.
Important
Four myths, one rule: the date comes from the certificate or the registration, never from a rumour.
MOT Due Dates At A Glance
Use this table as a quick reference, then follow the sections above for detail and worked examples.
| Situation | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First MOT, car | By third anniversary of registration | Registered 12 March 2024, due by 12 March 2027 |
| Later MOTs | By anniversary of the last test | Expiry 13 April 2027 |
| Earliest test keeping date | One month minus a day before expiry | Expiry 15 May, earliest 16 April |
| Test before that | New expiry is a year minus a day from pass | Pass 14 April, new expiry 13 April next year |
| Expired MOT | Cannot drive or park on road | Exceptions: repair, pre-arranged test |
| Fine | Up to £1,000 | Per GOV.UK |
What Are The Key MOT Date Facts In One Place?
Four figures cover most questions, according to GOV.UK:
- Three years for a first test.
- A month minus a day for the early window.
- One year minus a day for a certificate.
- Up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.

How To Use These Figures
Treat them as a mental checklist. If you remember these three, you can answer almost any date question without a lookup:
- The window.
- The first-test age.
- The fine.
What The Figures Do Not Tell You
They do not cover:
- Vehicle classes with other rules.
- Exemptions.
- Northern Ireland.
Where your vehicle is unusual, check the class-specific pages or GOV.UK.
Note
These four figures describe the typical car, van or motorcycle. Always confirm unusual cases on GOV.UK.
What Is The Timeline For A New Car's First MOT?
A new car passes through registration, a three-year gap and then a test window in the final month. The timeline below shows the key points.

Year One And Two
Nothing is legally required, but a service and basic checks keep the car safe. Some parts wear out regardless of age:
- Tyres
- Wiper blades
The Final Year Before The Test
Start looking at the date about two months ahead. Do these things:
- Note the registration date on the V5C.
- Set a reminder for the window.
- Ask garages about their first-test prices.
Test Month
Aim to test in the first half of the window. That leaves the second half for any repair and retest.
Pro Tip
Put the window opening date in your calendar, not just the deadline.
Years one and two
Nothing is legally required, but a service and basic checks keep the car safe.
Final year and test month
Note the V5C date, set a reminder and aim to test in the first half of the window.
What Should I Do Before My MOT Is Due?
A week or two before the test, check these simple items, which account for many avoidable failures:
- Lights
- Tyres
- Wipers and washer fluid
- Horn
- Mirrors
- Number plates
- Warning lights

Quick Checks You Can Do At Home
- Walk round the car and check every bulb, including the number plate light.
- Look at tyre tread and sidewalls for damage.
- Top up washer fluid and check the wipers clear the screen.
- Sound the horn.
- Note any dashboard warning lights that stay on.
Pro Tip
Ask a friend to stand behind the car while you press the brakes and indicators. You cannot see your own brake lights.
Why Timing Matters
Spot it early
A blown bulb found in the early window is cheap to fix.
Spot it at the test
The same bulb found at the test costs a fail.
Deeper preparation is covered on our failures and advisories page.
Warning
A warning light that stays on can be enough for a fail. Get it looked at before the test, not after.
When Should I Book My MOT?
Book once you know your window opens, and ideally at least a week ahead. For popular garages at month-end, book earlier still.
Booking Ahead For The Early Window
You can book an appointment for a date inside the window as soon as you like, and many garages take bookings weeks ahead. The booking date and the test date are separate, so booking early does not move your expiry.
Note
Only the date of the pass changes your expiry. The date you made the booking has no effect.
Choosing A Slot
Weekday mornings are often easier. See how to book an MOT for cost and garage selection.
Should I Test Early Or Wait Until The Last Week?
Test in the early window, and preferably in its first half. You keep the renewal date and have time to fix problems. Waiting until the final week leaves no margin.
| Test timing | Renewal date kept? | Time for repairs |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier than the window | No, new date is a year minus a day from pass | Plenty, but days lost |
| First half of window | Yes | About two weeks or more |
| Final week | Yes | Very little |
| After expiry | Not applicable, no valid MOT | None, car off road |
The Trade-Off
Earlier testing is not always worse, but it costs days. Within the window you lose nothing, so there is little reason to wait.
A Rule Of Thumb
- Window open? Book.
- Window not open? Wait, unless there is a specific reason.
Pro Tip
If you are unsure whether the window is open, run the date through the calculation steps above first.
How Do I Decide Whether To Test Now Or Wait?
Check if the window is open, then check the car's condition. If both are good, test now.
Test now
The window is open and the car is likely to pass.
Wait or repair first
The window is not open, or the car needs repair before it will pass.

The Decision In Two Questions
Ask yourself two questions:
- Is the window open? If not, wait.
- Is the car likely to pass? If not, repair first.
If yes to both, book now.
Special Cases
Long trips, storage or sale plans can change the answer. Think through each before booking.
Worked example
You are going abroad for three months and your MOT expires while you are away. Testing before you leave may be worth the lost days.
How Do I Keep Track Of MOT Dates For Several Vehicles?
Keep one list with registration, expiry, window opening date and tax date for each vehicle. Add reminders to a shared calendar, and sign each vehicle up for the GOV.UK reminder as a backup.
A Simple Fleet Table
| Vehicle (example) | Expiry | Window opens | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Van A | 14 January 2027 | 15 December 2026 | Book in first week |
| Car B | 2 February 2027 | 3 January 2027 | Book after holidays |
| Van C | 20 March 2027 | 21 February 2027 | Book for mid-month |
Why Fleets Lose Days
A fleet manager who tests everything on the same day loses days on vehicles that were not yet in the window. Test each vehicle in its own window.
Warning
A single block booking for every vehicle can quietly shorten several certificates at once.
Using Reminders
GOV.UK states each reminder relates to a single vehicle's registration, so sign up separately. Check the service for details on multiple vehicles. Our home page guide explains how to check any registration.
Which MOT Date Matters When Buying A Used Car?
The expiry date matters because it tells you how long the car is covered and when you will need to pay for a test. A car with a few days left is a different purchase from one with eleven months.
If you are buying
Verify the expiry on the record. A short MOT justifies a lower price.
If you are selling
Tell the buyer the expiry date in writing and cancel your reminders.
Questions To Ask The Seller
- When does the MOT expire?
- Was it passed with advisories?
- Is there a recent service history?
Using The Date In Negotiation
A short MOT justifies a lower price, because you take on the cost and risk of a test. A long MOT is worth more, but do not pay for it blindly. Verify it with the record first.
Pro Tip
Check the expiry yourself on the lookup tool. Do not rely on what the advert says.
What Is The MOT Position When I Sell A Car?
Selling a car does not transfer your reminder, and the buyer takes the vehicle with whatever MOT remains. When you sell, do both of these:
- Cancel your own reminders.
- Notify the DVLA of the sale.
Selling With A Short MOT
You can sell with little or no MOT, but be honest:
- Tell the buyer the expiry date.
- Expect many buyers to test before first use.
Our rules page covers selling without an MOT.
Stopping Reminders
GOV.UK states you must unsubscribe from reminders after selling the vehicle. Do it on the day of sale.
Important
Tell the buyer the expiry date in writing, and unsubscribe your reminder the same day.
What If I Buy A Car And The MOT Is About To Expire?
Book a test at once, or arrange a pre-arranged test journey before the expiry. A car bought with days left should not be left to lapse.
Collecting A Car With No MOT
If you need to collect a car whose MOT has run out:
Legal routes
- A pre-arranged test journey.
- A repair journey.
- Transport on a trailer.
Not a legal route
Do not drive it home on the assumption it will be fine.
Warning
Driving an untested car home from a private sale is not an exception. Arrange a booked test or a trailer.
Insurance On The Day
Arrange insurance before you drive away. Cover is a separate requirement from the MOT.
Do Classic And Old Vehicles Follow These Dates?
Some historic vehicles are exempt from the MOT, so they have no due date. Exemption rules are specific, so check the current GOV.UK guidance and our exemptions page.
Why Exempt Does Not Mean Unsafe
An exempt vehicle must still be roadworthy. Keepers of older vehicles often test voluntarily for peace of mind.
Checking Whether You Are Exempt
Use GOV.UK and the lookup on this page. If a lookup shows no MOT record, it may be exempt or untested.
Note
No record does not prove an exemption. Confirm on GOV.UK before assuming you do not need a test.
What If My Lookup Shows No MOT Date?
A missing result usually means a mistyped plate, a vehicle under its first-test age, an exempt vehicle, or a very recent registration. Check these causes in turn.
Checklist Of Causes
- The registration contains a typo, such as a zero for the letter O.
- The vehicle has not reached its first MOT.
- It is exempt.
- It was imported and not yet registered.
Next Steps
Check the V5C, then try GOV.UK. If it still shows nothing, contact the DVLA. Our home page covers the data sources.
Pro Tip
Try the plate again with no spaces before you assume anything else is wrong.
How Do MOT Dates Differ By Region?
Great Britain and Northern Ireland run separate schemes. The same date logic applies in broad terms, but first-test ages and reminders differ, so check the right authority.
Great Britain
DVSA runs the test and GOV.UK carries the guidance. Reminders come by text or email.
Northern Ireland
The DVA runs the test and reminders are posted seven weeks ahead.
Great Britain
DVSA runs the test and GOV.UK carries the guidance. Reminders come by text or email.
Northern Ireland
The DVA runs the test and reminders are posted seven weeks ahead, according to GOV.UK. See our Northern Ireland page.
Read the Northern Ireland guide
What Do MOT Date Terms Mean?
Short definitions help you read official guidance without confusion.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MOT | Ministry of Transport test, the annual roadworthiness check |
| DVSA | Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, runs MOT in Great Britain |
| DVLA | Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, holds vehicle records |
| DVA | Driver and Vehicle Agency, Northern Ireland |
| V5C | Vehicle registration certificate, the logbook |
| SORN | Statutory Off Road Notification |
| VED | Vehicle excise duty, road tax |
| VIN | Vehicle Identification Number |
Expiry Versus Renewal
Expiry is when it runs out; the renewal date is the annual date you keep by testing in the window.
Window Versus Grace
The window comes before expiry. There is no grace period afterwards.
Important
The window is before expiry and the grace period does not exist. Do not mix them up.
What Is A Sensible Yearly Routine For MOT, Tax And Insurance?
Keep one calendar entry for each, with an alert at six weeks. Test in the early window, renew tax straight afterwards and compare insurance a few weeks ahead.
A Suggested Order
- Six weeks ahead: set the alert and check the lookup.
- One month ahead: the window opens, book the test.
- Test, then renew tax. The MOT must come first.
- Update the calendar with the new expiry.
Linking The Dates
Because tax requires a valid MOT, the MOT comes first. See MOT and tax checks.
Pro Tip
Review the whole set on one day each year, so the three dates never collide.
Final Summary: How Do I Stay On Top Of My MOT Date?
Look up the date, set a reminder, test within the early window and keep the new certificate date in your diary. That routine avoids most MOT problems.
Your Action Plan
- Use the lookup tool above to find your expiry.
- Work out the window opening date.
- Sign up for the GOV.UK reminder.
- Book inside the window.
Where To Check Next
Read the official GOV.UK guidance on getting an MOT, and use our certificate guide if you need a copy of your record.
How Do Different Test Dates Change My Next Expiry?
The date of a pass decides the next expiry, so a small change in the test date can move your renewal by weeks. The table shows illustrative examples for an old expiry of 20 December 2026.
| Example pass date | Inside window? | New expiry |
|---|---|---|
| 1 November 2026 | No | 31 October 2027 |
| 20 November 2026 | No | 19 November 2027 |
| 21 November 2026 | Yes | 20 December 2027 |
| 10 December 2026 | Yes | 20 December 2027 |
| 20 December 2026 | Yes | 20 December 2027 |
Reading The Table
The only difference between the second and third rows is a single day, yet it changes the new expiry by a month. That is why the one-month-minus-a-day rule is worth learning.
Note
Only the 20 November row falls one day short of the window, which is why it resets the date.
Using It For Your Own Plans
Replace the old expiry with your own and apply the same logic, then confirm with the lookup tool before you commit to a date.
Which Reminder Method Suits Me Best?
The best reminder is the one you will actually see. Use more than one if the car matters to your daily life.
Combine methods
Pair a calendar alert at six weeks with the official one-month reminder.
Unknown senders
Do not rely on a single message from an unknown sender. Start from GOV.UK or your own garage.
| Method | Cost | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOV.UK text or email | Free | Official, one month ahead | Depends on correct contact detail |
| Calendar alert | Free | Under your control | You must set it after each test |
| Garage reminder | Often free | Linked to a booking offer | Date held by the garage |
| Paper certificate on the fridge | Free | Always visible | Easy to lose or forget |
Combining Methods
Pair a calendar alert at six weeks with the official one-month reminder. If either fails, the other catches it.
What To Avoid
Do not rely on a single message from an unknown sender. Start from GOV.UK or your own garage, and see how to book an MOT for safe booking habits.
Warning
Never pay or enter personal details through a link in an unexpected text about your MOT.
When Is My MOT Due In The UK?
Your MOT is due on the expiry date of your current certificate anywhere in the UK, or by the third anniversary of registration if the vehicle has never been tested. The quickest way to see it is to enter the registration number into the lookup tool above or the free GOV.UK service.
Pro Tip
No registration number to hand does not mean no answer. The certificate, a reminder message or the V5C still gets you to the date.
Check When Your MOT Is Due With A Registration Number
Type the number plate into the lookup tool or the GOV.UK "check MOT status" service. GOV.UK states the service shows whether a vehicle has an MOT certificate and when it runs out. It asks only for the registration number, so you can check your own car, a family member's, or one you are thinking of buying.
Check When Your MOT Is Due Without A Registration Number
If you do not have the plate to hand, use another document that carries the same date:
- Your MOT certificate: the expiry date is printed on it.
- A reminder text or email: it states the date a month ahead.
- Your insurance or garage paperwork: some insurers and garages note the MOT date, but treat it as a pointer and confirm it against the official record.
- The V5C logbook: it shows the registration number and the first registration date, which is all you need for a vehicle's first MOT.
Once you have the plate from any of these, run the lookup.
Note
The V5C does not show an MOT expiry date. It helps you find the plate and the first-registration date only.
Find The MOT Expiry Date On Your Certificate
Look for the expiry date on the latest certificate. If it is lost, GOV.UK says you can use the vehicle's MOT history online instead, and our MOT certificate page explains replacements.
Find The MOT Expiry On A Car You Are Buying
Look up the plate before you pay and compare the expiry date with the advert. If the vehicle is over three years old and shows no current MOT, ask why before going further.
Does GOV.UK, DVSA Or DVLA Send My MOT Reminder?
The free reminder is offered through GOV.UK, and DVSA handles help with MOT reminders. GOV.UK does not describe the reminder as a DVLA service, so searches for a "DVLA MOT reminder" or "gov MOT reminder" lead to the same single GOV.UK reminder page.
Official reminder
Sign up on GOV.UK with the registration number and a mobile number or email. It is free.
Garage reminder
Sent by the garage from its own records. It is not an official notice.
GOV.UK lists a DVSA customer service line for reminder problems, so confirm the number and opening hours on the reminder page before calling. To set one up, follow the steps in the reminders section above.
Garage Reminders Versus The Official One
Many garages text customers before the due date. That is a courtesy and a sales prompt, so cross-check the date with the lookup tool. If you ever receive a message asking you to pay for a reminder, treat it with suspicion.
How Early Can An MOT Be Done?
An MOT can be done up to a month minus a day before the expiry date and still keep your renewal date. If your MOT expires on 15 May, the earliest day that keeps it is 16 April, according to GOV.UK.
Can I MOT My Car 3 Months Early?
You can, but it costs you days. A test three months early is accepted, yet the new certificate runs for one year minus a day from the pass date, so roughly two months of the old certificate are thrown away.
Worked example
Expiry 20 December 2026, pass on 20 September 2026. The new expiry is 19 September 2027, not 20 December 2027, so you lose three months of cover.
How Early Can A First MOT Be Done?
We read GOV.UK's early-test guidance as applying to any MOT, but for a first test, confirm the earliest date with the test station before booking.
What If The Only Slots Are Before The Window Opens?
If a garage can only offer a slot before the window, compare the cost of the lost days against waiting. Ask for a cancellation slot inside the window first.
What If My Vehicle Is Nearly New, Used Or Imported?
The first MOT clock starts at first registration, whoever owns the car now. For a used vehicle, check the record. For an imported vehicle, the date depends on how and when it was registered in the UK, so ask the DVLA or check GOV.UK rather than assuming.
New Car
Due by the third anniversary of registration, found on the V5C.
Used Car
If it is older than three years, it should already have a certificate. Look up the plate and read the expiry date before buying.
Imported Vehicle
GOV.UK's main MOT guidance does not set out a separate rule for imports. Check the vehicle's registration details and the current GOV.UK guidance, or ask a test station, before working out a date.
Vehicles Tested At One Year Old
Some vehicles must be tested at one year old. GOV.UK points to its MOT fees table for which ones, so check it for your vehicle type. Our motorcycles, vans and EVs page covers class differences.
What If My Vehicle Is Registered In Northern Ireland Or Moves Between NI And Great Britain?
Different rules apply in Northern Ireland, where the DVA runs the test and a postal reminder arrives about seven weeks ahead. GOV.UK states that if your last MOT was in Northern Ireland but your next test is in Great Britain, your renewal date is based on the Great Britain test date.
Pro Tip
Keep your Northern Ireland certificate and check GOV.UK before your first Great Britain test.
What If I Do Not Know My MOT Date And It May Have Lapsed?
Run the lookup first. If it shows no current MOT, treat the vehicle as untested: keep it off the road, book a test and use the pre-arranged test journey exception only if the car is roadworthy. See the expired MOT sections above, and our MOT rules and exemptions page for penalties.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is my MOT due?
Your MOT is due on the expiry date of your current certificate. For a vehicle that has never been tested, it is due by the third anniversary of its first registration, according to GOV.UK. Enter your registration number into the lookup tool at the top of this page, or use the official GOV.UK service, to see the exact date.
How can I check when my MOT is due?
Use the lookup tool on this page or the free GOV.UK check MOT status service with the vehicle's registration number. You can also read the expiry date on your latest certificate, or on a reminder text or email. No account, logbook or owner details are needed for the lookup.
How early can you get an MOT?
You can take an MOT up to a month minus a day before it expires and keep the same renewal date. GOV.UK gives the example that an MOT expiring on 15 May can be renewed from 16 April. Testing earlier still counts, but the new expiry then runs from the pass date instead.
What happens if I get my MOT more than a month early?
The pass is valid, but your new expiry becomes one year minus a day from the date you passed, not from the old expiry. You therefore lose the unused days. For example, a pass on 14 April for a 15 May expiry gives a new expiry of 13 April the following year.
When is the first MOT due on a new car?
A new car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, according to GOV.UK. The date is taken from first registration shown on the V5C logbook, not from the day you bought it. A car registered on 12 March 2024 therefore needs testing by 12 March 2027.
Do new cars need an MOT?
Yes, but not straight away. A new car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration. Until then the vehicle must still be roadworthy and kept in a safe condition. Some vehicle types must be tested at one year old, and GOV.UK points to the MOT fees table for which ones.
Which vehicles need an MOT at one year old?
GOV.UK states that some vehicles must be tested at one year old but does not list them in its main guidance, directing readers to the MOT fees table. The rule depends on the vehicle type and how it is used, so check that table or ask a test station rather than guessing.
Can I drive on the day my MOT expires?
Yes. The certificate is valid until the end of its expiry date, so you can drive all day on that date. From the following day you cannot drive or park on the road without a valid MOT, except for the two narrow exceptions GOV.UK lists. Plan your test well before the final day.
Is there a grace period after my MOT expires?
No. GOV.UK does not provide any grace period after an MOT runs out. The only allowances are driving to or from a place of repair and driving to a pre-arranged MOT test. The month before expiry, when you can test early, is the only extra time available, and it comes before the deadline.
Can I drive with an expired MOT?
Generally no. GOV.UK states you cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out, and you can be prosecuted and fined up to £1,000. The exceptions are driving to or from a repair and driving to a pre-arranged MOT test, and the vehicle should still be roadworthy.
Can I drive to an MOT test with an expired MOT?
Yes, if the test is pre-arranged and the vehicle is roadworthy. GOV.UK lists driving to a pre-arranged MOT test as an exception. Keep your booking confirmation so you can prove it, and drive directly there. A journey made for another purpose is not covered by this exception.
What is the fine for driving without an MOT?
GOV.UK states you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. You can also be prosecuted. Other consequences, such as problems with insurance, can follow. The full penalty picture is covered on our rules and exemptions page, and you should check GOV.UK for the current wording.
Can I get an MOT reminder?
Yes. GOV.UK offers a free reminder by text message or email. You need the vehicle's registration number and a mobile number or email address. For cars, vans and motorcycles the message arrives one month before the MOT is due, which is also when the early-test window opens.
Is the GOV.UK MOT reminder free?
Yes. GOV.UK describes its MOT reminder service as free, and it works by text or email. Be cautious about any service that charges just to remind you of the date, because the official reminder does the same job at no cost. Always start from the GOV.UK reminder page.
How do I stop MOT reminders?
Use the GOV.UK service to view or stop reminders with the vehicle's registration number and the contact detail you signed up with. You can also follow the instructions in a text or click the unsubscribe link in an email. Texting to unsubscribe costs your standard message rate, according to GOV.UK.
Do I need to stop reminders when I sell my car?
Yes. GOV.UK states you must unsubscribe if you have sold, transferred, scrapped or written off the vehicle, or registered it as off the road. Doing so stops messages meant for you reaching the wrong person and avoids confusion about who is responsible for the next test.
How far ahead does the MOT reminder arrive?
For cars, vans and motorcycles the GOV.UK reminder arrives one month before the MOT is due. For lorries, buses and large trailers it arrives two months ahead. Residents of Northern Ireland cannot use the online service and are sent a reminder by post seven weeks before the MOT is due.
Can I use the GOV.UK MOT reminder in Northern Ireland?
No. GOV.UK states the online reminder service is not available to people living in Northern Ireland, who receive a reminder by post seven weeks before the MOT is due. Northern Ireland tests are run by the DVA. Our Northern Ireland page explains how that scheme works.
What if my MOT reminder never arrived?
The reminder is a convenience, and it does not change your legal duty. Common causes are a mistyped number, a message sent to spam or a reminder linked to the wrong registration. Check the date with the lookup tool, then book a test. Keep your own calendar alert as a second layer.
How do I work out the earliest date I can take my MOT?
Take your expiry date, go back one calendar month and add one day. For an expiry of 20 December 2026, the window opens on 21 November 2026. A pass on or after that date keeps your renewal date. Check unusual month-end cases with the lookup tool or your test station.
How long does an MOT last?
An MOT certificate lasts one year minus a day from the date of the pass, or from the old expiry date if you tested within the early window. A pass on 14 April 2026 gives an expiry of 13 April 2027. After the first test, the next is due by the anniversary of the last.
Can I change my MOT date?
You cannot choose an expiry date. It changes only when the vehicle passes a new test. Testing within the early window keeps the same renewal date, while testing earlier resets it to a year minus a day from the pass. If you only want to move an appointment, contact the test station.
Can I move my MOT to a different month?
Yes, indirectly. If you pass a test earlier than the one-month-minus-a-day window, the new expiry runs from the pass date, which moves your annual date earlier. You lose the unused days in return. Many people do this deliberately to spread MOT, tax and insurance costs across the year.
What happens to my MOT date if my car fails?
Nothing changes. A fail does not move the old expiry date, and no new certificate is issued. If you fail inside the window, you can repair and retest before the old date. A new expiry date comes only from a pass. Dangerous defects mean the car should not be driven.
Can I drive after failing my MOT?
It depends. If your old MOT is still valid you can usually keep using the vehicle, unless the test found a dangerous defect, in which case you should not drive it. If the old MOT has expired, GOV.UK allows driving to or from a place of repair, but the car must be safe.
Can I park my car on the road without an MOT?
No. GOV.UK states you cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. If the car is on private land, such as your own driveway, the rule about the road does not apply, but you will need a valid MOT before using it on the road again.
Can I tax my car without an MOT?
No, where an MOT is required. GOV.UK states you cannot renew vehicle tax without a valid MOT. If tax is also about to run out and the car is not being used, you can register it as off the road with a SORN. Our MOT and tax page covers the details.
What is a SORN?
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It tells the DVLA that a vehicle is not being used or kept on the road. GOV.UK mentions it as an option when tax is due to run out without a valid MOT. A SORN does not replace the need for an MOT if you drive again.
Does my insurance cover me with an expired MOT?
It depends on your policy. Some insurers treat a missing MOT as a problem, and an accident with an expired MOT can complicate a claim. Check your policy wording and ask your insurer in writing. This is general information, not insurance advice.
What if my MOT expires tomorrow, can I drive tomorrow?
If the certificate's expiry date is tomorrow, you can drive tomorrow, because it is valid until the end of that day. You cannot drive it the day after without a new pass, apart from the exceptions for repair and pre-arranged tests. Book the test today.
What if my MOT expired three months ago?
You cannot use the vehicle on the road until it has a valid MOT, apart from the two GOV.UK exceptions. A three-month gap is legally the same as a one-day gap, but practical problems grow. Book a test or keep the car on private land until you can.
How do I find out when my MOT is due without the logbook?
You do not need the logbook for an existing MOT. Enter the registration number into the lookup tool or the GOV.UK service. The V5C only matters for a vehicle that has never been tested, because you need the first registration date to work out when its first MOT falls due.
Where is the registration date on the V5C?
The V5C logbook shows the date of first registration for the vehicle. That date starts the three-year clock for a car's first MOT. Do not use the date you bought the car. If your logbook is missing, you can ask the DVLA for a replacement. Check GOV.UK for the current process.
Why does my lookup show no MOT date?
Usually the plate has a typing error, the vehicle is under its first-test age, it is exempt, or it has just been registered. Check the number for confusable characters such as 0 and O, then compare it with the V5C. If nothing appears, try the GOV.UK service.
Does an MOT from Northern Ireland count in Great Britain?
GOV.UK states that different rules apply if your last MOT was in Northern Ireland and your next test is in Great Britain. Because the schemes are run by different authorities, check the current guidance before moving a vehicle. Our Northern Ireland page explains the DVA scheme.
Can I book my MOT before the early-test window opens?
Yes. You can book an appointment for a date inside the window as soon as the garage takes bookings. The booking date does not affect your expiry. What matters is the date of the test itself. If that date falls before the window, you lose days from the old certificate.
Is it worth testing early to avoid forgetting?
Sometimes, but it costs days. If you test earlier than a month minus a day before expiry, the new certificate runs from the pass date. If you test inside the window, you lose nothing, so a reminder and a booking in that window is usually the better way to avoid forgetting.
Should I test in the first or last week of the window?
The first half is usually better. You keep your renewal date and have time to repair and retest if the car fails. The last week leaves almost no margin. If the car is in good order and the garage has a late slot, the last week can still keep your date.
What counts as a pre-arranged MOT test?
A pre-arranged test is one booked before the journey. GOV.UK lists driving to a pre-arranged MOT test as an exception when the MOT has run out. Keep the confirmation email, text or booking reference and drive straight to the garage. The vehicle must be roadworthy.
Do I need a V5C to book an MOT?
Garages usually need only the registration number to start a test, and the vehicle itself. Some may ask to see the V5C for a first MOT or when details need checking. Phone the test station if you are unsure what to bring. Our booking page lists what to bring.
Can I check another person's car MOT due date?
Yes. MOT results are public and linked to the registration number, so anyone can look up the expiry date of a vehicle. The record shows test outcomes and mileage readings, not the keeper's name. This is helpful when buying a used car or checking a family member's vehicle.
What does MOT stand for?
MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, the former government department that introduced the test. The test is now overseen in Great Britain by the DVSA, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Northern Ireland has its own scheme, run by the DVA, the Driver and Vehicle Agency.
Why is my MOT expiry one day before the anniversary?
A certificate lasts one year minus a day, so a pass on 14 April 2026 expires on 13 April 2027. The subtracted day ensures the certificate covers exactly twelve months. Remember this when you diarise the date, because writing down the same calendar date a year later would be a day late.
How much does the early test lose me if I test two weeks before the window?
It depends how early you are. You lose the days between your pass date and the old expiry that fall outside the window. For example, a test on 1 November for a 20 December expiry gives a new expiry of 31 October 2027, about seven weeks earlier than waiting.
Can I get my MOT done on the expiry date?
Yes, a test on the expiry date itself is within the window and keeps your renewal date. It is risky, though. If the car fails, you have no time to repair it before the certificate runs out. Treat the expiry day as a last resort, not as a plan.
Do motorbikes and vans follow the same MOT due date rules?
The main logic is the same for most vehicles: a first test and then annual tests, with the same early-test rule. Class differences affect fees and some test ages. Our motorcycles, vans and EVs page covers class-specific details, and the GOV.UK fees table shows which classes differ.
Do electric cars need an MOT?
Yes. Electric cars follow the same MOT due dates as other cars, with a first test by the third anniversary of registration. The test checks the parts that matter to safety, though not the battery in the way a service would. Our motorcycles, vans and EVs page has the details.
Do classic cars need an MOT?
Some historic vehicles are exempt from the MOT, so they have no due date. Exemption depends on the vehicle's age and condition, and the rules are specific, so check the current GOV.UK guidance. Our rules and exemptions page explains the main points. Exempt vehicles must still be roadworthy.
What should I check before my MOT?
Check lights, tyres, wipers, washer fluid, horn, mirrors, number plates and warning lights. These simple items cause many avoidable failures and can be fixed cheaply. Do the checks a week or two before the test, ideally inside the early window so there is time for repairs.
How do I find a garage for my MOT?
Choose a garage by location, availability and reputation, then book a slot. Compare offers carefully and be cautious of upselling. Prices vary by class and location, so check the maximum fee on GOV.UK. Our booking page explains how to compare test stations and what to bring.
Can I check my MOT date by text?
GOV.UK reminders can be sent by text, but you do not check the date by text. To look up your date, use the online tools with the registration number. The reminder text, if you signed up, shows the date a month ahead of expiry, so keep it as a record.
What is the difference between MOT due and MOT expiry?
In practice they mean the same thing: the last day your certificate is valid. Some people use "due" to mean "time to book", which is sensible, but the legal deadline is the expiry. For a new car, the due date is the third anniversary of registration.
Does the MOT date affect my tax date?
They are separate dates, but they are linked. You cannot renew vehicle tax without a valid MOT, where one is required, so the MOT usually comes first. Test in the early window and renew tax straight afterwards. Our MOT and tax page explains how to check both together.
Is my MOT date shown on the number plate or tax?
No. The MOT expiry is not displayed on the car. It is held in the public MOT record and printed on the certificate. Use the registration number to look it up. Tax status is a separate record, and both can be checked online without personal details.
Can I do an MOT on a car I have just bought?
Yes, if the car is due or you want it checked. A new owner can book a test in the normal way. Check the expiry first with the lookup tool, so you know how much time remains. If it has run out, use a pre-arranged test journey.
What if the garage gives me a different MOT date from the record?
Check your certificate and the online record, then ask the garage to explain. A difference can come from an early test or a data-entry error. If the record is wrong, the test station that issued the certificate is the first place to ask for a correction. Our certificate page explains errors.
Can I test the car before my holiday and still keep the date?
Only if the test falls in the window. If you are away during the window, you can test earlier, but the new expiry will run from the pass date, so you lose days. Weigh the lost days against the inconvenience. Do not leave the car without a valid MOT.
Do I need an MOT if my car is off the road?
If the car is registered as off the road with a SORN and kept on private land, it does not need an MOT to be kept there. You need a valid MOT before using it on the road again, and before taxing it. Check GOV.UK for the current rules.
How many days before my MOT expires can I test it?
Up to a month minus a day before expiry. If your MOT expires on 15 May, the earliest day is 16 April, according to GOV.UK. In days that is usually 29 to 30, depending on the month, but use the calendar rule rather than counting days to avoid error.
Where can I find official MOT guidance?
Use GOV.UK for the official rules. The pages on getting an MOT and on checking MOT status carry the guidance on first-test age, the early window and driving without an MOT. This site is independent and is not affiliated with GOV.UK, the DVSA, the DVLA or the DVA.
When is my MOT due UK?
Your MOT is due on the expiry date of your current certificate, wherever you are in the UK. A vehicle that has never been tested is due by the third anniversary of its first registration. Enter the registration number into the lookup tool or the GOV.UK check MOT status service to see the exact date.
How do I check when my MOT is due without a registration number?
Use another document that carries the date, such as your latest MOT certificate or a reminder text or email. The V5C logbook shows the registration number and first registration date, so it gets you to the plate for a lookup. It does not show an MOT expiry date itself.
Is there a DVLA MOT reminder?
GOV.UK offers the free MOT reminder, and DVSA handles help with it. GOV.UK does not describe the reminder as a DVLA service. Searches for a DVLA, DVSA or gov MOT reminder all lead to the same GOV.UK reminder page, where you sign up with a registration number and a mobile number or email.
How early can an MOT be done?
Up to a month minus a day before the current MOT expires, and you keep the same renewal date. If it expires on 15 May, the earliest date is 16 April, according to GOV.UK. A test before that still counts but the new expiry runs from the date you passed.
Can I MOT my car 3 months early?
Yes, the pass is valid, but you lose time. The new certificate runs for one year minus a day from the pass date, so about two months of the old certificate are wasted. Testing inside the final month keeps your renewal date and is usually the better option.
When is the MOT due on a used car I just bought?
Look up the registration number and read the expiry date, which is the deadline whoever owns the car. If the car is under three years old it may have no MOT yet, and its first test is due by the third anniversary of registration shown on the V5C.
When is the MOT due on an imported vehicle?
GOV.UK's main MOT guidance does not set a separate date rule for imports. Check the registration details and the current GOV.UK guidance, or ask a test station or the DVLA, rather than assuming. Once the vehicle has an MOT record, the usual expiry date rules apply.
Do Northern Ireland and Great Britain have different MOT due dates?
Yes, the schemes are separate. In Northern Ireland the DVA runs tests and reminders are posted about seven weeks ahead. GOV.UK states that if your last MOT was in Northern Ireland and your next is in Great Britain, your renewal date is based on the Great Britain test date.
Which vehicles are due an MOT sooner than three years?
Some vehicles must be tested at one year old rather than three. GOV.UK points to its MOT fees table to show which vehicle types are tested at one year, so check that table for your vehicle. After the first test, vehicles are generally tested yearly.
Where can I see my MOT due date online for free?
Use the free GOV.UK check MOT status service or the lookup tool on this page with the registration number. Both show whether the vehicle has a current MOT and when it runs out. No account is needed, and you can also view the vehicle's MOT history online.
