About GovMotCheck
Last updated: 8 November 2026
GovMotCheck is an independent website that helps drivers check MOT history, understand MOT rules and avoid common mistakes, in plain English.
Important
We are not a government service. GovMotCheck is not GOV.UK and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by DVLA, DVSA, DVA, NI Direct or any other public body. For official services, use GOV.UK or NI Direct.
What We Do
- Provide a free lookup that shows a vehicle's MOT status, test history, mileage and advisories from its registration number.
- Publish guides on MOT due dates, booking, costs, failures, certificates and exemptions.
- Explain how Great Britain (DVSA) and Northern Ireland (DVA) testing differ.
Where The Data Comes From
Vehicle results come from official MOT records for Great Britain, supplied through the DVSA MOT history service. We do not edit those records. If a result looks wrong, the test centre that carried out the test, or DVSA, is the place to correct it.
How We Write And Check Our Guides
- Every guide is written from official sources such as GOV.UK, DVSA, DVLA and NI Direct, listed at the foot of each page.
- Each page shows the date it was last reviewed. Fees, dates and rules change, so we recheck them regularly.
- Where we cannot verify a figure, we say so and point to the official page instead of guessing.
Advertising And Independence
We do not sell vehicle records or send you marketing about your vehicle. If we ever add advertising or affiliate links, they will be labelled and will never change what a guide says.
