What Is An MOT Certificate?
An MOT certificate is the record that a vehicle passed its annual MOT test. The MOT is the Ministry of Transport roadworthiness and exhaust emissions test, run in Great Britain by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The certificate shows the vehicle met the minimum legal standard on the day it was tested.
This page explains what the certificate shows, how to find or replace one, and how the official codes VT20, VT30 and VT32 fit together. It is general information, written in November 2026. It is independent of these bodies:
- GOV.UK and the DVSA.
- The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).
- The DVA (Driver and Vehicle Agency in Northern Ireland).
Important
The certificate is only a copy of a result. The valid MOT is what matters, and it is stored centrally, so check the live record before you rely on any paper.

What Does "MOT Certificate" Actually Mean?
An MOT certificate is the document or digital record issued when a vehicle passes. In official DVSA guidance the pass document is called the VT20 test certificate.
Everyday drivers use several phrases to mean the same thing:
- MOT certificate
- MOT test certificate
- MOT paper
- proof of MOT
Note
If a buyer, insurer or employer asks for "proof of MOT", they almost always mean a VT20 copy or a printout of the online record.
What Does The MOT Certificate Let You Do?
A current certificate is evidence that the vehicle has a valid MOT. That matters in three main ways:
- Driving on public roads.
- Taxing the vehicle.
- Most sales, where the buyer wants to see the result.
GOV.UK states that you cannot drive or park a vehicle on the road if its MOT has run out, with limited exceptions. The rules themselves are covered on our MOT rules and exemptions page.
Warning
Do not assume a pass from last year still covers you. Once the expiry date passes, the MOT has lapsed whatever paper you are holding.
What Is The Difference Between The Certificate And The MOT Record?
The certificate is a copy of a result. The record is the entry held on the government database. Since the test centre enters results into the DVSA system, the database entry is what enforcement and tax systems read.
A paper copy is a convenience, not the master record.
The certificate
A copy of one test result, produced at one moment.
- Can be printed, emailed or downloaded
- Can go out of date if the record is amended
The record
The entry held on the government database.
- Read by enforcement and tax systems
- Always the version to trust
Do You Still Get An MOT Certificate?
Yes, in the sense that every pass and refusal is still recorded and a certificate can still be produced. Whether you are handed paper depends on the test centre. DVSA guidance says a test certificate must be printed via the MOT testing service when requested, so printing is on request rather than banned.
Paper copy
Printed on request through the MOT testing service.
- Ask before the test starts
- Ask before you pay for extra copies
Online copy
For tests in England, Scotland and Wales, download current and previous certificates from the check MOT history service on GOV.UK.
Pro Tip
Ask for paper before the test starts, or when you collect the keys. It is easier than asking again days later.
Are Paper MOT Certificates Still Issued?
Yes, on request. DVSA's MOT testing guide describes test certificates being printed through the MOT testing service when requested, and handwritten under contingency testing. We found no official statement that paper has been abolished.
Many centres now send a PDF or text instead, so ask at the desk if you want paper.
Why Do Most Drivers No Longer Receive One Automatically?
Because the pass is already stored centrally, so a printout is optional. Many centres give a receipt-style summary or email a copy. Nothing legal depends on holding the paper.
If you want one for your files, ask before you pay, since a centre may charge for extra copies.
Note
A receipt-style summary is not always the same as a full certificate. If you need the full document, say so, or download it yourself later.
Are MOT Certificates Online Now?
Yes. For tests in England, Scotland and Wales, GOV.UK states you can download copies of current and previous MOT certificates from the check MOT history service. Northern Ireland works differently, as covered further down this page.
What Is The Legal Status Of An MOT Certificate?
The certificate is evidence of a test result, not a licence or permit. The legal requirement is to have a valid MOT, which is recorded centrally. If you cannot find the paper, you have not lost the MOT itself.
Important
The law cares about a valid MOT on the record. It does not require you to carry the paper in the vehicle.
Does Losing The Paper Invalidate The MOT?
No. The MOT remains valid until its expiry date whether or not you hold a paper copy. You can confirm validity with the registration number on our MOT history check or on GOV.UK.
Who Can Ask To See The Certificate?
Several people may ask for proof:
- Buyers checking a used car.
- Insurers at quote or claim time.
- Fleet managers and employers.
- Some licensing bodies.
Police normally check the central database rather than ask for paper. Giving the registration number and letting the other party check online is usually quicker than finding a printout.
Worked example
Sam sells a 2015 hatchback. The buyer asks for the MOT paper, which Sam cannot find. Sam sends the registration, the buyer checks the online record and the sale goes ahead the same day.
Can A Certificate Be Wrong While The Database Is Right?
It can. A printout is generated at one moment, so a later correction to the record will not appear on an old copy.
DVSA guidance says that if a test record is amended, a free replacement certificate must be issued. Always trust the live record over an old printout.
Pro Tip
If a printout and the online record disagree, write down both versions before you contact the test centre. It speeds up the correction.
How Long Is An MOT Certificate Valid For?
An MOT certificate is normally valid for one year. GOV.UK states: "An MOT lasts for a year." If you test early inside the allowed window, the new expiry is one year minus a day from the pass date.

For How Long Is An MOT Certificate Normally Valid?
Twelve months, normally. The new certificate runs to the day before the anniversary of the previous expiry when you test within the early window. Our MOT due date guide shows the date arithmetic and worked examples.
Does A Certificate Run From The Test Date Or The Old Expiry Date?
It depends on when you test. GOV.UK says you can test up to a month minus a day early and keep the same renewal date. Testing earlier than that moves the expiry to one year minus a day from the pass.
Worked example
A car has a 15 May expiry. The earliest date to keep that renewal date is 16 April. A pass on 10 April would instead run for one year minus a day from 10 April.
Is A First MOT Certificate Valid For Longer?
Not in the sense of a longer period. A new car in Great Britain needs its first MOT at the age GOV.UK specifies for its class, and the certificate then lasts a year like any other. Check the first-test age for your vehicle on GOV.UK.
What Happens When The Certificate Expires?
The MOT lapses at the end of the expiry date. After that you cannot normally drive or park on the road, except in these cases, according to GOV.UK:
- Driving to a pre-arranged test.
- Driving to or from repairs.
Insurance and tax consequences are covered on the MOT and tax check page.
Warning
The exceptions are narrow. Keep the booking confirmation or repair booking available in case you need to explain the journey.
What Does An MOT Certificate Look Like?
A typical certificate is a single page headed with the test result, the vehicle details, the odometer reading and the test centre. Layouts have changed over time and between paper, PDF and handwritten contingency versions, so treat the descriptions here as typical, not exact.
What Details Are On An MOT Pass Certificate?
Typically, a certificate shows:
- The registration number.
- The vehicle make and model.
- The VIN (vehicle identification number).
- The colour.
- The odometer reading.
- The test date and expiry date.
- The test centre and an MOT test number.
DVSA guidance also mentions the tester's signature, country of registration and test centre.
Pro Tip
When you get a certificate, read every field once while you are still at the centre. A typo is much easier to fix on the day.
Is The VIN On An MOT Certificate?
Yes, DVSA guidance lists the VIN among the details on the certificate. It is the 17-character identifier stamped on the vehicle. Comparing it with your V5C (registration certificate) is a quick way to catch a certificate that belongs to a different car.
Is The MOT Test Number The Same As The V5C Number?
No. The MOT test number identifies one particular test. The V5C document reference is the 11-digit number on your vehicle registration certificate. A replacement certificate online uses the V5C number, as explained below.
Note
Do not confuse the two numbers when filling in a form. The wrong one is the commonest reason an online request fails.

What Do VT20, VT30 And VT32 Mean?
These are DVSA form codes. VT20 is the MOT test certificate (pass), VT30 is the refusal of test certificate, and VT32 is the advisory notice given after an inspection by a DVSA examiner. Sources vary on VT32, so this page relies on DVSA's own guidance.
VT20
The MOT test certificate, issued when a vehicle passes. Advisories can still appear on it.
VT30
The refusal of test certificate. It does not give the vehicle a valid MOT.
| Code | Name in DVSA guidance | When it appears |
|---|---|---|
| VT20 | MOT test certificate | A vehicle passes the test |
| VT30 | Refusal of test certificate | A test is refused, abandoned or aborted, or the vehicle fails |
| VT32 | Advisory notice | Outcome of an inspection by a DVSA examiner |
| CT20 / CT30 | Contingency versions | Handwritten when the testing system is unavailable |
Pro Tip
Only a VT20 (or its contingency version, the CT20) is a pass. If the form code on your paper is not one of those, it is not a pass certificate.
What Is A VT20?
A VT20 is the MOT test certificate issued when a vehicle passes. It is the document most people mean by "my MOT certificate". Advisories noted by the tester can still appear on a pass.
What Is A VT30?
A VT30 is the refusal of test certificate. DVSA guidance says it is issued in these situations:
- A test is refused.
- A test is abandoned or aborted.
- The vehicle fails or has dangerous defects.
It does not give the vehicle a valid MOT. Failure categories are explained on our MOT failures and advisories page.
Warning
A VT30 is not a "pass with faults". Do not drive on the assumption that the vehicle has an MOT because you hold one.
What Is A VT32?
Per DVSA's guidance, a VT32 is an advisory notice that tells the presenter the outcome of an inspection carried out by a DVSA examiner. Some commercial websites describe it as a pass-with-advisories sheet or a retest record. Those descriptions are not in the official guidance we checked.
What Are CT20 And CT30 Certificates?
CT stands for contingency testing. When the online system cannot be used, centres write results by hand on CT forms. DVSA guidance says duplicate and replacement certificates cannot be issued while a centre is operating under contingency testing.
Do You Ever See A VT29?
Yes. DVSA's retention table lists the VT29 alongside the VT20 and VT30. It is a separate form in the same family. We did not find official wording on its use that we could verify, so check DVSA's MOT testing guide if you need the detail.
Note
If you see a form code not covered here, treat the DVSA testing guide as the authority and ask the test centre what the form is for.
How Do I Get A Replacement MOT Certificate?
You can get one free online using the vehicle registration and the 11-digit V5C reference number, or in person at an MOT centre. GOV.UK states the online route is free for lost or damaged certificates, and a centre can charge up to £10. Northern Ireland uses a different service.
Online
Free on GOV.UK. You need the registration and the 11-digit V5C number.
At an MOT centre
Any centre in Great Britain can issue a duplicate for cars, motorcycles and vans. It can charge up to £10.
Pro Tip
Try the free online route first. It takes minutes and you can save the PDF straight away.

What Details Do You Need For A Replacement MOT Certificate?
As of November 2026, GOV.UK's replacement service asks for two things:
- The vehicle registration (number plate).
- The 11-digit number from the V5C log book.
The page we checked does not say the MOT test number is required. Have the V5C to hand before you start.
Note
Requirements can change. Read the form on GOV.UK as you go and follow it if it asks for something different.
Where Is The 11-Digit V5C Number?
It is printed on the V5C registration certificate, the document commonly called the log book. The DVLA issues it. If you have not got the V5C because you have just bought the car, the new keeper's V5C(NI) or "new keeper" slip may carry the number, so check the paperwork you were given.
How Do I Get A Copy Of My MOT Certificate Online?
Go to GOV.UK's MOT history service, enter the registration, and download the current or previous certificate for tests in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK's guidance says you need the registration to view history and the V5C number to see where a test was done.
How Do I Download An MOT Certificate?
Follow these steps:
- Search the registration. Use the check MOT history service on GOV.UK.
- Select the test. Pick the current or a previous test.
- Choose the certificate download. The service offers current and previous certificates for GB tests.
- Save the PDF. Keep it on your phone or in cloud storage so it is not tied to one device.
Pro Tip
Name the file with the registration and expiry date, for example "AB12CDE-MOT-expires-2027-05-14". You will find it faster later.
How Do I Print An MOT Certificate?
Download the PDF and print it on plain A4 paper. You do not need special stock for your own records. Remember that a home printout is a copy of the record, and the live database remains the source of truth. A buyer can still verify it with the registration.
Can I View My MOT Certificate Online Without The V5C?
You can see MOT history with just the registration, according to GOV.UK. The V5C number is needed to show where a test was done, and for the replacement certificate service. If you are missing the V5C, apply to DVLA for a replacement first, or use a centre where you can prove entitlement another way.
Note
Viewing history and getting a replacement are two different services with different requirements. Make sure you are using the one you need.
Where Else Can I Get A Duplicate MOT Certificate?
Any MOT centre in Great Britain can issue a duplicate for cars, motorcycles and vans, not only the one that tested the vehicle. Take the registration and V5C reference. GOV.UK says the centre can charge up to £10.
Which Centre Should I Ask?
Ask the original centre first, because it can usually find the test fast and may waive the fee for a regular customer. Any centre can issue one. Ring ahead, as some centres only do duplicates at set times.
Pro Tip
Ask the price on the phone before you travel. The fee is capped at £10, but it is not fixed.
What Proof Will The Centre Ask For?
DVSA's testing guide says the customer must prove their right to a duplicate. It gives the proof as one of the following, plus the registration:
- The test number, or
- The V5C reference number.
A driving licence alone is unlikely to be enough. Bring the V5C if you can.
Is There A Time Limit For Duplicates?
Yes, for centre-issued duplicates. DVSA's MOT testing guide says duplicates cannot be issued more than 18 months after the test. The online GOV.UK route does not state the same limit on the page we checked, so use the download for older records.
Important
If the test was more than 18 months ago, do not rely on a centre. Use the online download instead.
Ask the original centre first
It can usually find the test quickly. Ring ahead to check when it does duplicates.
Any centre can help
Take the registration and the V5C reference or test number. Fees are capped at £10.

What Does A Replacement MOT Certificate Cost?
It is free online and up to £10 at an MOT centre for cars, motorcycles and vans, per GOV.UK as of November 2026. For heavier vehicles GOV.UK lists postal forms with fixed payments. Fees can change, so confirm on GOV.UK before paying.
| Vehicle | Route | Cost shown on GOV.UK |
|---|---|---|
| Car, motorcycle, van | Online | Free |
| Car, motorcycle, van | MOT centre | Up to £10 |
| HGV and trailer | Post form VTG59 | £13 |
| Public service vehicle | Post form VTP6 | £10 |
Worked example
Priya has lost the certificate for her van. She pays nothing by using the online service. A friend with the same problem pays £8 at a local centre, which is within the £10 cap.
Is A Replacement MOT Certificate Really Free?
Yes, online. If a website asks you to pay for the online replacement, it may not be the official service. Look for a gov.uk address. Third-party sites can legally charge for their own services, but the GOV.UK download itself carries no fee.
Warning
Check the web address before you enter card details. Search adverts can place paid look-alike sites above the official one.
Official route
A gov.uk address, with the online replacement free of charge.
Look-alike sites
Paid sites that appear above the official one in search adverts. Check the address before entering card details.
Can A Centre Refuse To Charge Or To Help?
A centre can charge up to the cap, and it is not obliged to waive it. It cannot issue a duplicate while operating under contingency testing, according to DVSA guidance. If one centre cannot help, try another or use the free online route.
How Do I Replace An MOT Certificate For An HGV, Trailer Or Bus?
GOV.UK states that HGV and trailer certificates are replaced by posting form VTG59 with £13, and public service vehicle certificates by posting form VTP6 with £10. Download the current forms from GOV.UK because addresses and payment methods can change.
Pro Tip
Fill in the form carefully and keep a copy before you post it. Postal routes are slower than online ones.
What About HGV MOT Certificates?
HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) have an annual test run by DVSA rather than a standard MOT, and the certificate is replaced by post. Operators should keep their own records too. Fleet record keeping is dealt with below.
What About PSV Certificates?
PSVs (public service vehicles, such as buses and coaches) use form VTP6 for replacements. Taxis licensed by a local council may follow council rules as well, so ask your licensing authority.
What If I Lost My MOT Certificate?
You have not lost the MOT. Check the registration on the MOT history service, confirm the expiry date, and get a copy only if you need one for a buyer, insurer or employer.
Important
Do not pay anyone to "recover" your MOT. The record is held centrally and you can check it free.
Check the record
Look up the registration, confirm the expiry date, and download a copy only if someone needs it.
Paying to recover it
You have not lost the MOT. Nobody needs to be paid to find it.
What To Do If You Lost Your MOT Certificate
Work through these steps in order:
- Look up the registration. Do this online first and confirm the pass.
- Download the certificate. This works if you are in England, Scotland or Wales.
- Ask a centre for a duplicate. Do this if you need a stamped paper copy.
- Keep the download. Store it with your car paperwork afterwards.
Can I Still Drive If I Lost It?
Yes, as long as the MOT itself is valid on the central record. The legal requirement is a valid MOT, not carrying the paper. Even so, a replacement avoids arguments with buyers, employers or parking operators who ask for evidence.
What If The Certificate Was Damaged Or Faded?
Treat it exactly like a lost one. Thermal printouts fade, especially on a dashboard. Download a fresh copy and replace the faded paper.
Warning
If a certificate has been altered, do not use it. DVSA's guidance says VT20s showing alterations must not be issued.
What If The Vehicle Was Tested In Northern Ireland?
GOV.UK says you cannot download Northern Ireland certificates through its MOT history service. If the MOT is still valid, you can apply for a duplicate certificate on NI Direct. GOV.UK states duplicates are not available for expired MOTs.
Great Britain
Download current and previous certificates from the GOV.UK history service, or use a centre.
Northern Ireland
No download from GOV.UK. Apply on NI Direct while the MOT is still valid.
Important
For an NI test, apply while the MOT is still valid. Once it has expired, a duplicate is not available.
Read the Northern Ireland guide

Replacement MOT Certificate In Northern Ireland
Use NI Direct, the Northern Ireland government website, and have your registration ready. The DVA (Driver and Vehicle Agency) runs the NI test. Our Northern Ireland MOT page covers the wider scheme, and we have not verified an NI fee for duplicates, so check NI Direct.
Does GOV.UK Show NI Test History?
GOV.UK says NI tests are shown in history since 2017. You can see the result, but you cannot download a certificate from the GOV.UK service for an NI test.
Can I Use An NI Certificate In Great Britain?
A vehicle moved between regions has to meet the rules of the region where it is kept, and the keeper should check with the relevant authority. Our Northern Ireland MOT page explains the differences.
Note
If you are moving a vehicle between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, contact the relevant authority before you assume the old MOT will carry over.
Can I Get A Replacement MOT Certificate Without The V5C?
The official online service asks for the V5C reference, so you will need it or an alternative route. Centre-issued duplicates accept the test number as proof according to DVSA guidance. If you have neither, ask DVLA for a replacement V5C first.
Using The MOT Test Number Instead
DVSA's guidance gives the test number or V5C reference plus the registration as proof for a duplicate at a centre. If you still have an old email or text from the test, it may carry the test number. Show that to the centre.
Pro Tip
Search your inbox and messages for the centre's name or "MOT". The test number is often in the confirmation.
Where To Find A Missing V5C
Contact DVLA for a replacement V5C. That is outside this page, but note that a replacement takes time, so a centre duplicate with a test number is often faster. Our home page MOT history check can at least confirm the MOT status immediately.
Why Would A Replacement Certificate Be Issued For Free?
DVSA's guidance says that if a test record is amended, a free replacement certificate must be issued and the original destroyed. This is different from a duplicate, which replaces a lost copy of an unchanged record and may attract a fee.
What Is The Difference Between A Replacement And A Duplicate?
In DVSA's wording:
Replacement
Follows an amendment to the record. DVSA says it must be free.
Duplicate
Another copy of an unchanged record. A fee may apply.
Everyday users use the terms interchangeably. Ask for the one that matches your situation.
Note
If the centre made an error, say so clearly. That points to a free replacement rather than a paid duplicate.
What Does The Replacement Show?
DVSA says the replacement certificate shows three things:
- Who changed the record.
- The VTS (vehicle testing station) number.
- The issue date.
That audit trail is why you should not accept a hand-edited certificate in its place.
How Long Does A Replacement Take?
Online downloads are immediate once you enter the details. A centre can usually print one while you wait, if its system is working. Postal routes for heavy vehicles take longer, so allow for the post. We could not verify service-level times, so treat any number you read elsewhere cautiously.
Pro Tip
If you need the certificate for a sale or a deadline, use the online route or a centre rather than the post.
Can I Get A Same-Day Certificate?
Usually yes, online or in person. If your centre is under contingency testing it cannot issue duplicates, so try again later or use the online route.
What If The Website Will Not Accept My Details?
Check these common causes:
- Typos in the registration and the V5C number.
- A zero read as the letter O.
- A recent change of keeper.
If it still fails, try a centre with the same details. Keep a screenshot of any error message if you need to contact DVSA.
Warning
Do not keep guessing numbers on the form. Check the V5C itself and re-enter the details slowly.
How Do You Read An MOT Certificate?
Start with the result, then check the registration and VIN, then the dates, then the odometer reading, then any advisory notes. Doing it in that order catches the commonest problems, which are a wrong vehicle, a wrong date and a wrong mileage.
Step-By-Step Reading Order
- Check the result. Confirm it says pass, not refusal.
- Match the registration. It should match the number plate.
- Match the VIN. Compare it with the V5C and the chassis plate.
- Read the dates. Note the test date and expiry date.
- Check the odometer. Look at the reading and the unit (miles or kilometres).
- Read the advisories. Treat them as a to-do list.
Pro Tip
Take a photo of the certificate on your phone before you start. You can zoom in and compare it with the online record.
Which Line Matters Most To A Buyer?
The expiry date and the odometer reading. A long MOT is worth little if the mileage looks off. Compare the figure with the previous tests on the MOT history check, where mileage at each test is listed.
What Does The Odometer Reading On An MOT Certificate Mean?
It is the mileage the tester recorded from the dashboard at the time of the test. It is a snapshot taken by a person, so it can contain a typing slip. GOV.UK's history service lists the mileage at each test, which lets you spot jumps and falls.
Worked example
A 2014 hatchback shows 62,400 miles one year and 26,400 the next. That looks like a typing slip, a unit error or a clocked car. Ask the seller to explain before you pay anything.
Can The Odometer Reading Be Wrong?
Yes, in three common ways:
- A typing slip by the tester.
- A unit mix-up on an imported car.
- A faulty display.
A clear error is fixable. A mileage that falls between tests deserves questions before you buy, since it can indicate a clocked car or a recorded mistake.
Warning
Do not accept "the tester must have made a mistake" without checking. Compare the history, ask for service invoices and phone the centre.
How To Change Incorrect Mileage On An MOT Certificate
Contact the testing centre that did the test and ask them to review the record. DVSA's guidance describes amended records producing a free replacement certificate. If the centre will not help, contact DVSA through GOV.UK. Bring evidence such as a service invoice showing the true mileage.
Why Does A Wrong Mileage Matter?
Because future buyers and insurers read the same history. A wrong high figure can depress value, and a wrong low figure may look like fraud later. Fix it now while the test is recent and the tester can recall the car.
What If My MOT Certificate Has The Wrong Registration Or Details?
Ask the centre that tested the vehicle to correct the record at once. Errors in the registration, make, model or colour can cause trouble with insurers and buyers. A corrected record leads to a free replacement certificate according to DVSA guidance.
Important
Raise errors as soon as you spot them. The longer a wrong detail sits in the record, the harder it is to explain later.
MOT Certificate Wrong Registration
A wrong registration means the test may sit against another vehicle's history. Contact the centre immediately, because other keepers can be affected. If you do not get a prompt fix, use the feedback route on GOV.UK to ask DVSA to investigate.
Wrong Colour, Make Or Model
These are usually minor, but they can confuse automated checks. Ask for an amendment. If the V5C itself is wrong, that is a DVLA matter, so correct the V5C as well.
Note
Fixing the certificate does not fix the V5C, and fixing the V5C does not fix the certificate. They are separate records.
Who Can Amend A Test Record?
The testing centre can amend within its own rules, and DVSA can amend in its own right. DVSA's guidance says a replacement certificate must show who changed the record and when. A private garage cannot edit the database independently.
What Do Advisories On A Pass Certificate Mean?
An advisory is a note about something that was not bad enough to fail but may need attention soon. The vehicle still passes, and the certificate remains valid. Advisories are listed in the test result and in history.
Pro Tip
Photograph the advisory list and put the items in your phone reminders with a target month.
Do Advisories Affect Validity?
No. A pass with advisories is a pass. The certificate is valid for its full period. Our MOT failures and advisories page covers how to judge which advisories to act on first.
Should I Act On Every Advisory?
Not every one, but read them as a to-do list with deadlines. A worn tyre is an advisory today and a failure next year. Record the date you fixed each item, so a future buyer sees you acted.
Worked example
The certificate lists "front brake pads wearing thin" as an advisory. The owner replaces them in March and keeps the garage invoice with the certificate. At the next test there is nothing to explain.
What Does A VT30 Refusal Certificate Tell You?
It tells you the vehicle did not get a pass at that attempt. DVSA guidance says a VT30 is issued when a test is refused, abandoned or aborted, or when the vehicle fails or has dangerous defects. It carries no MOT validity.
Pass with advisories
A valid VT20. The advisories are a to-do list.
VT30 refusal
No MOT validity. Keep it, as it lists what must be fixed.
Warning
A VT30 never gives you an MOT. If your previous MOT has expired, you cannot treat a VT30 as cover.
What Is A Refusal Of An MOT Test Certificate?
A refusal means the tester declined to test, for example because the vehicle was unsafe or could not be tested safely. DVSA's guide has an appendix listing the grounds for refusal. You can ask for the refusal in writing, which produces the VT30.
What Is An Abandoned Test Certificate?
If a test is stopped part-way, for example because of a safety concern or because the tester cannot continue, it is recorded as abandoned or aborted and a VT30 can be issued. You should be told why. The result in history may show an abandoned or aborted entry.
Do I Need The VT30 For The Retest?
Usually the centre holds the record. Keep your copy anyway because it lists the defects that must be fixed. See the failure guide for retest rules and timings.
Pro Tip
Photograph the VT30 as soon as you receive it. Paper in a car glovebox can fade or get lost.
Does A Retest Produce A New Certificate?
A pass at retest produces a normal VT20 with a new test date and expiry. The failed attempt remains in history. DVSA guidance covers partial retests, which this page leaves to the failures page.
Which Date Does The New Certificate Use?
It uses the test date of the pass, then follows the usual one year rule. If you passed early, check the early-test rule on the MOT due date page, because the expiry may not be what you expect.
Will The Failed Test Still Show?
Yes. History shows failures as well as passes. Do not expect a pass to delete the earlier attempt. Buyers often view a recent fail followed by a quick pass as a sign of honest repairs.
Note
A fail followed by a pass is not a red flag by itself. Look at what the defects were and how quickly they were fixed.
What Is A Temporary MOT Certificate?
There is no such thing as a temporary MOT certificate that gives extra time. People use the phrase to mean a printout, a duplicate or a contingency handwritten document. Treat any "temporary" paper claiming to extend validity as a warning sign.
Warning
Anyone offering a "temporary MOT" to extend your validity is either mistaken or trying to mislead you.
What Is A Contingency MOT Certificate?
A contingency certificate (CT20) is handwritten when the online system is down. The result is entered into the system afterwards. DVSA guidance says centres keep these forms for three months under normal retention rules.
Are "Ghost" MOT Certificates Real?
A ghost MOT is a fraud in which a certificate is issued, or a record created, without the vehicle actually being tested. It is illegal and puts the buyer at risk. Check the history for:
- A plausible mileage.
- A real centre.
- A believable test pattern.
How Do You Sell A Car With An MOT Certificate?
Give the buyer the registration, the expiry date and, if you have it, a copy of the certificate. The buyer can verify everything online, so your paper only speeds things up. Selling without a valid MOT is possible, and the rules are on our rules page.
Valid MOT
Give the registration, the expiry date and a printout. Say what advisories were listed.
Expired MOT
You can still sell. Be clear in the advert, as the buyer may want a test or a price that reflects one.
Pro Tip
Put the MOT expiry date and the number of advisories in your advert. It builds trust and cuts time-wasting calls.
Do I Have To Hand Over The Paper?
Not legally, because the record is held centrally. In practice buyers like paper, so hand over a printout and keep a copy for yourself. Say honestly what advisories were listed.
What If The MOT Has Expired When I Sell?
You can still sell, but be clear in the advert. See MOT rules and exemptions for what is allowed. A buyer will often want the car tested or priced to reflect a test to come.
Should I Get A Fresh MOT Before Selling?
Often it helps, because a long MOT is an attractive selling point. It also reveals problems that a buyer would raise. Weigh the cost against likely price improvement before deciding.
Worked example
A seller has 23 days left on a 2013 saloon's MOT. A fresh pass would give about a year. A buyer comparing two similar cars may prefer the one with the longer MOT.
How Do You Check An MOT Certificate When Buying A Used Car?
Check the record
Look up the registration before you travel, and match the date, mileage and VIN.
Trusting the paper
A seller's photo or printout can be old, edited or from another car.
Follow these steps:
- Look up the registration. Use GOV.UK or the MOT history check.
- Confirm the pass. Check the date and expiry.
- Compare the VIN and mileage. Match them against the car and the V5C.
- Read the advisories. Decide which need attention.
- Compare with the seller's paperwork. Any difference needs an explanation.
Important
Run the registration check before you travel to view the car. It takes a minute and can save a wasted journey.
Compare The Paper With The Record
If the seller's certificate shows a date or mileage that the online record does not, walk away or ask why. A mismatch can be an innocent amendment, but it can also signal a forged document. Ask the seller to name the testing centre and phone it.
Check The VIN Against The Car
Match the VIN on the certificate with the V5C and the plate on the vehicle. A certificate that belongs to a different car, even by one character, is a classic problem on forged paperwork.

Does An MOT Certificate Count As Insurance Proof?
No. An MOT is not insurance. Insurers may ask whether the vehicle has a valid MOT, and a lapsed MOT can affect cover. Check your policy wording and ask your insurer, because we cannot give advice on a specific policy.
MOT
Evidence that the vehicle met the minimum standard on the test day.
Insurance
A separate policy. Having one does not replace the other.
Note
An MOT and an insurance policy are separate things. Having one does not replace the other.
Will An Insurer Ask For The Certificate?
Some ask at quote time and at claim time. Many check the central record. Keep a copy handy so you can answer quickly.
What Happens To Insurance Without A Valid MOT?
The risk is that a claim is disputed, particularly if the cause relates to a defect the test would have caught. The exact outcome depends on the policy and the insurer, so read the terms or ask. Legal penalties are on the rules page.
Warning
Do not assume your insurer will pay out in full if the MOT lapsed. Ask them before you need to claim.
Do You Need An MOT Certificate To Tax A Car?
You need a valid MOT, which is recorded centrally, to tax a vehicle that needs one. GOV.UK states you cannot renew vehicle tax while the MOT has expired. You do not need to show the paper certificate when taxing online.
Can You Tax A Car Without An MOT Certificate?
Not if the vehicle needs an MOT and does not have a valid one. GOV.UK says that if your tax is about to run out, you can register the vehicle as off the road (SORN, a Statutory Off Road Notification). After a pass you can tax it again. See the MOT and tax check page.
Pro Tip
Book the MOT before the tax runs out. It avoids the scramble of a SORN or a gap in cover.
Can You Tax A Car At The Post Office Without The Certificate?
Tax checks use the central MOT record, so the paper is not what matters. If the record shows a valid MOT, the paper is not required. If you cannot confirm it, check the registration first.
How Do You Spot A Fake MOT Certificate?
Check the registration online first. A genuine pass will appear in the database with matching date, mileage and centre. Then inspect the paper for alterations, odd fonts and a centre that does not exist or does not do MOTs.
Signs of a genuine pass
- Matching test in MOT history
- Same date, mileage and centre
- A centre you can reach independently
Signs of a fake
- Alterations or correction fluid
- A mismatch with the online record
- A seller who refuses an online check
| Warning sign | What to do |
|---|---|
| Date or mileage differs from the online record | Treat as a mismatch and ask the seller |
| No matching test in MOT history | Do not accept the paper as proof |
| Visible alterations or correction fluid | Refuse the document |
| Centre unknown or unreachable | Phone the number found independently |
| Seller refuses an online check | Walk away |
Important
The online record beats the paper every time. If they do not match, the paper is the problem until proven otherwise.
What Do You Do If You Suspect A Fake?
Follow these steps:
- Do not hand over money.
- Keep a photo of the document.
- Note the seller's details.
- Report it.
We have not verified the current official reporting route, so check GOV.UK for how to report MOT fraud to DVSA, and tell the police if you have been defrauded.
Can A Fake Certificate Affect Me As An Owner?
Yes, if you drove with a vehicle that did not have a real MOT you could face the penalty for no MOT. GOV.UK states a fine of up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. This is why verifying online matters.
Warning
Buying in good faith does not make a fake MOT valid. Check the record yourself.
Is It An Offence To Alter A Certificate?
Forging or altering a test certificate is an offence. We have not cited the exact statute here. For legal detail see legislation.gov.uk or take advice.
How Should Fleets Handle MOT Certificates?
Fleet managers should treat the central record as the source of truth and keep a downloaded copy of each pass on file. A named person should own renewals, and the fleet list should be checked against the live record on a regular schedule.
Keep the PDF
It shows the exact result and advisories at the time, for auditors, insurers and leasing companies.
Check the record
Compare the fleet list with the live record on a regular schedule.
Pro Tip
Put each vehicle's MOT expiry in a shared calendar with a reminder a month ahead. It stops renewals depending on one person's memory.
Build A Simple Certificate Register
Keep one row per vehicle with these columns:
- Registration and VIN.
- Last test date and expiry date.
- Mileage at the last test.
- A link to the downloaded PDF.
Review the expiry column monthly. A shared spreadsheet is enough for a small fleet.
Why Store The PDF As Well As The Date?
Because auditors, insurers and leasing companies often ask for evidence. The PDF shows the exact result and advisories at the time. The live record may later be amended, and your file shows what was true when you relied on it.
How Long Should You Keep MOT Certificates?
There is no single keeping period that this page can verify for private keepers. DVSA's retention rules apply to testing centres, not to you. A sensible habit is to keep at least the current certificate and the last one with your vehicle paperwork.
Note
Keeping more than the minimum costs nothing if you store PDFs in the cloud, and it can settle a dispute later.
What Do Testing Centres Have To Keep?
DVSA's guidance lists retention periods for centres, for example 3 months for contingency forms. That is a centre obligation. It means a centre may not hold old paper at all, so do not assume they can reprint something from years back.
Can I Get Old MOT Certificates?
For GB tests, GOV.UK says you can download previous certificates from the history service. History is held for these vehicles and dates:
- Cars, motorcycles and vans: since 2005.
- HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches: since 2018.
- Northern Ireland tests: since 2017.
Important
Download older certificates you may need while the service still offers them, and save them yourself.
What Is The Difference Between The MOT Certificate And MOT History?
The certificate is one test result. History is the full list of results for a registration. Use the certificate when someone asks for proof of the current MOT, and use history when you want the pattern over years.
Certificate
One test result. Use it as proof of the current MOT.
History
The full list of results for a registration. Use it to see patterns over years.
| Question | Use the certificate | Use the history |
|---|---|---|
| Is the MOT valid today? | Yes, if recent | Yes, and more reliable |
| What mileage at the last test? | Yes | Yes |
| Has the car failed before? | No | Yes |
| Were advisories repeated? | No | Yes |
| Need a document for a buyer? | Yes | Usually a screenshot is fine |
Pro Tip
Buying a used car, look at the history first and the certificate second. History shows repeated problems that a single certificate hides.
Where Do History And Certificate Meet?
On GOV.UK's history service, you choose a test and download its certificate. So the two are linked. Our MOT history check page explains how to read the full record.
Can You Reprint An Old Or Previous MOT Certificate?
For GB tests, yes, by downloading it online. For centre-issued duplicates, DVSA's rules stop duplicates after 18 months from the test. The online download is the practical route for anything older.
Why Would Anyone Need An Older Certificate?
Common reasons include:
- A dispute over mileage.
- A warranty claim.
- An insurer's request.
- Proving a continuous run of MOTs when applying for a historic vehicle registration.
Download older ones while the service offers them.
Worked example
A dealer disputes the mileage on a 2011 estate sold three years ago. The former owner downloads the old certificate and shows the mileage recorded at that test.
What If The Old Test Is Not Listed?
Tests before the history cut-off will not appear online. Look in your own paperwork, or ask the original centre, though centres may no longer hold records that old.
Do Taxis, Minicabs And Ride-Hailing Drivers Need A Certificate?
They need a valid MOT, and licensing authorities may set their own testing requirements as well. Operators sometimes ask for a copy of the certificate on onboarding. Keep a PDF ready and check your licensing authority's rules, because they vary by area.
Warning
A valid MOT alone may not satisfy your licence conditions. Check with your licensing authority before you rely on it.
What Does Uber Ask For?
We cannot verify any operator's requirements here. Check the operator's driver pages and your licensing authority. A downloaded PDF from GOV.UK is typically what people upload.
Are Taxi Tests Different From A Normal MOT?
Some licensed vehicles have extra council tests in addition to an MOT. The MOT certificate does not replace those. See the motorcycles, vans and EVs page for brief notes on vehicle types.
What About Exempt Vehicles And An "MOT Exemption Certificate"?
There is no certificate you collect to become exempt. GOV.UK explains that some vehicles, such as certain historic ones, do not need an MOT, and the keeper declares the exemption when taxing. Rules and conditions are on our MOT rules and exemptions page.
Note
Do not rely on a seller's claim that a vehicle is exempt. Check the conditions on GOV.UK.
Do Exempt Vehicles Still Show In History?
If a vehicle has never been tested, history will show nothing or little. Absence of a certificate is not proof of exemption, so confirm the vehicle's status with the keeper's declaration and GOV.UK.
Can An Exempt Vehicle Still Be Tested?
Yes. Owners of exempt classics sometimes choose a voluntary test for peace of mind and to support insurance. The result is recorded as a normal test.
How Do MOT Certificates Work For Imported Vehicles?
A vehicle gets MOT records once it is registered in the UK and tested. Earlier foreign inspection documents are not MOT certificates. Check the country of registration and the VIN on the certificate match the import paperwork.
Pro Tip
Keep the import documents with the MOT certificates. Together they make the vehicle's history much easier to explain.
Does The Certificate Show The Country Of Registration?
DVSA guidance mentions country of registration among details on the certificate. This helps tell imports from UK-first-registered cars.
Odometer Units On Imports
Imports may show kilometres. Check the unit on the certificate, because a conversion error can look like a mileage drop.
Worked example
An imported 2017 coupe shows 80,000 on a foreign document and about 49,700 on a UK certificate. The difference is kilometres against miles, not a clocked car, but confirm the unit before you decide.
What Happens To The Certificate When The Keeper Or Plate Changes?
The MOT belongs to the vehicle, not to the keeper. A change of keeper does not cancel it. If a private plate is fitted, the MOT stays linked to the vehicle's identity, not to the plate on the day, so confirm the registration used in the history.
The MOT carries over
It belongs to the vehicle, so a change of keeper does not cancel it.
Tax does not
Tax is not transferable. The new keeper must tax the vehicle themselves.
Buying From A Private Seller
Ask for the registration and VIN, and run the history. If the V5C shows a recent plate change, look up both the current and previous registrations.
Tax After A Change Of Keeper
Tax is not transferable between keepers. See the MOT and tax check page for the rules. The MOT, though, carries over.
Important
The new keeper must tax the vehicle themselves, even though the MOT carries over.
Does Repair Work After A Pass Change The Certificate?
No. A pass is a snapshot. If you modify the vehicle afterwards, the certificate does not update. Some significant modifications must be reported elsewhere, such as to DVLA, but that is outside this page.
Do Advisories Fixed Later Get Removed?
No. The advisory stays in the record for that test. Your invoice is the evidence that you fixed it, so keep it with the certificate.
Pro Tip
Staple the repair invoice to the certificate, or save both in the same folder. A future buyer will see the fix at once.
What Are The Common Myths About MOT Certificates?
Several beliefs about certificates are wrong and can cost money. The table below sets out the commonest, with what GOV.UK or DVSA guidance actually supports.
Myth
You must carry the paper in the car, and a lost certificate means a lost MOT.
Fact
The legal requirement is a valid MOT on the record. The MOT stays valid until expiry.
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| You must carry the paper in the car | The legal requirement is a valid MOT on the record, not carrying paper |
| A lost certificate means a lost MOT | The MOT stays valid until expiry |
| A replacement always costs money | The GOV.UK online replacement is free |
| VT30 means the car passed with faults | VT30 is a refusal or fail document |
| Paper certificates no longer exist | Certificates are printed on request |
| A pass proves the car is mechanically sound | It shows a minimum standard on the day |
Note
Most myths come from the days when the paper was the only proof. The central record has replaced that role.
Is A Pass A Guarantee?
No. The MOT is a minimum safety and emissions check on the day. It is not a service and does not promise future reliability. Our what is an MOT page explains the scope.
What Mistakes Do People Make With MOT Certificates?
The mistakes are usually small and avoidable. Most come from relying on paper rather than the record, or from not keeping a copy before selling.
Relying On A Seller's Photo
A photo can be old, edited or from another car. Look up the registration yourself, and do it before you travel to view the car.
Warning
A photo of a certificate proves nothing about the car in front of you. Match the VIN and the online record.
Confusing The Dates
People read the test date as the expiry date. Always read the expiry line. For date arithmetic see the due date page.
Throwing Away The Only Copy
Download a PDF when you pass. Cloud storage costs nothing and saves a trip to a centre later.
Relying on paper
Photos and loose printouts can be old, edited or lost.
Download a PDF
Save it with a clear filename and keep it in cloud storage.
Paying For An Official-Looking Service
Some websites charge for what GOV.UK provides free. If you are paying for a replacement online, check the web address first.
What Are Some Worked Examples?
The examples below are invented to show how the rules work in practice. They are labelled example, and your own situation may differ.
| Example | Situation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Example A: a 2016 hatchback | Owner lost the paper, MOT valid | Look up registration, download PDF, no need to pay |
| Example B: a 2012 estate | Buyer sees a different mileage on the paper | Compare with history, ask the centre, walk away if unresolved |
| Example C: a 2019 van | Fleet needs proof for a client | Download the PDF, store in the fleet register |
| Example D: a 2008 saloon | Tested in Northern Ireland, copy needed | Apply on NI Direct if MOT is still valid |
| Example E: an HGV trailer | Certificate damaged | Post form VTG59 with the payment shown on GOV.UK |
Example A In Detail
The owner enters the registration and the V5C number on the GOV.UK service, downloads the PDF and saves it. Total cost, nothing. Time, a few minutes.
Example B In Detail
The buyer notices the paper says a higher mileage than the history. The seller says the tester made a typo. The buyer phones the centre, which confirms and amends the record, then issues a free replacement. Sale proceeds.
Worked example
If the centre had not confirmed the typo, the buyer would have been right to walk away. A mismatch with no explanation is a reason to stop.
What Are The Key Facts At A Glance?
As of November 2026, the facts below are the ones we could verify from GOV.UK and DVSA guidance. Anything else on this page that is marked as typical should be confirmed on the official site.
- An MOT normally lasts for a year.
- VT20 is the test certificate, VT30 the refusal of test certificate, and VT32 the advisory notice from a DVSA examiner.
- Online replacement needs the registration and the 11-digit V5C number and is free.
- A centre can charge up to £10 for a replacement.
- Heavy vehicle postal replacements use VTG59 (£13) and VTP6 (£10).
- Centre duplicates cannot be issued more than 18 months after the test.
- NI certificates cannot be downloaded from the GOV.UK service.
- Driving without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000.
Important
If any of these figures matter to a decision, check GOV.UK first. Fees and limits can change.

What Do The Key Terms Mean?
The glossary below defines the words used on this page. Terms are explained once and used consistently.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MOT | The annual roadworthiness and emissions test for most vehicles |
| DVSA | Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, runs MOT testing in Great Britain |
| DVLA | Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, keeps vehicle registration records |
| DVA | Driver and Vehicle Agency, the Northern Ireland body |
| V5C | The vehicle registration certificate, or log book |
| VIN | Vehicle identification number, 17 characters |
| VTS | Vehicle testing station |
| CT | Contingency testing, used when the system is down |
| SORN | Statutory Off Road Notification |
Why Does The V5C Matter Here?
Because its 11-digit reference proves you are entitled to a replacement certificate. Without it, you rely on the test number at a centre.
What Privacy Points Apply To A Certificate?
A certificate shows the vehicle, not the keeper's name. It does contain the registration and VIN, which are used by checking services. Be careful when posting a photo online, because the registration links to the vehicle and its history.
Pro Tip
Crop or blur the VIN and any reference numbers before sharing a photo of your certificate online.
Is The V5C Number Secret?
Treat it as sensitive. It lets someone obtain a replacement certificate or see where tests were done. Do not post it in adverts.
Can Anyone Look Up My MOT?
Yes, anyone with the registration can view the history. That is why buyers can check a car before visiting.
How Do You Store A Digital MOT Certificate Sensibly?
Save the PDF with a clear filename, such as registration and expiry date, in cloud storage and on your phone. Add a calendar reminder for a month before expiry. Back up the V5C number in a safe place, separately from the document itself.
Pro Tip
Use a filename pattern that sorts by date, for example "2026-11-AB12CDE-MOT". The latest one is then always easy to find.
Should I Screenshot Or Download?
Download the PDF if you can. A screenshot is fine for a quick message. The PDF has the full detail.
Do Reminders Replace The Certificate?
No. A reminder tells you when to act. The certificate is evidence of the result. Use both.
What Should You Do If You Dispute A Result On The Certificate?
If the result itself is disputed, such as a fail you disagree with, there are appeal routes through DVSA. Those are covered on the MOT failures and advisories page. If only the certificate details are wrong, ask the centre to amend.
Disputed result
A fail you disagree with goes through the DVSA appeal route.
Wrong detail
A wrong mileage or registration goes to the testing centre first.
Note
A disputed result and a wrong detail are different problems. A wrong mileage goes to the centre; a disagreement over a fail goes through the DVSA appeal route.
Who Do I Contact First?
The testing centre. Give them the test number and the correction, in writing. Keep copies. If unresolved, take it to DVSA via GOV.UK.
What Evidence Helps?
Useful evidence includes:
- Photos of the odometer.
- Service invoices.
- The V5C.
- Any email or text from the centre.
- A short clear note of what is wrong and what should be right.
Where Can You Check This Against Official Sources?
Use GOV.UK for the replacement service and MOT history, DVSA's MOT testing guide for form codes and duplicate rules, and NI Direct for Northern Ireland. If the official wording changes, it overrides this page.
Important
This page is dated November 2026. If an official page says something different, follow the official page.
When To Double-Check
Double-check at these points:
- Before paying any fee.
- Before relying on a time limit.
- Before applying in Northern Ireland.
Fees and rules change, and this page is dated November 2026.
Independent Status
GovMotCheck is an independent information site, not affiliated with DVSA, DVLA, DVA or GOV.UK. We cannot access your records or issue certificates.
What Should You Do Next?
If you only need proof, look up your registration and download the PDF. If the MOT is close to expiry, check the MOT due date guide, and if you need a test, see how to book an MOT.
Quick Action List
- Look up the registration.
- Confirm the expiry date.
- Download and save the certificate.
- Fix any errors with the centre.
- Set a reminder a month before expiry.
Pro Tip
Do steps 1 to 3 today, even if the MOT is months from expiry. It takes a few minutes and you will have the file when you need it.
When To Ask For Help
If the record is wrong, a centre will not respond, or you suspect fraud, contact DVSA through GOV.UK. Keep a written record of everything.
When Is It Legal To Drive Without An MOT Certificate?
It is legal to drive without the paper certificate, because the law looks at whether the vehicle has a valid MOT, not at what you are carrying. It is not normally legal to drive a vehicle that needs an MOT once the MOT has expired. Searches for this mix up the two, so this section separates them.
Important
"Without an MOT certificate" can mean two very different things: no paper in the glovebox (usually fine) or no valid MOT on the record (usually an offence).
Is It Legal To Drive Without The Paper MOT Certificate?
Yes, if the MOT itself is valid. The MOT is recorded centrally, and checks by police, insurers and the tax system read that record. You do not have to carry the printout in the vehicle, and losing it does not end the MOT. Our MOT rules and exemptions page covers the wider rules.
When Is It Legal To Drive Without A Valid MOT?
Only in two narrow cases. As of November 2026, GOV.UK states the only exceptions are driving the vehicle to or from somewhere to be repaired, and driving it to a pre-arranged MOT test. Outside those, GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 and prosecuted.
- Keep the booking confirmation or repair booking to hand.
- Take the direct route rather than combining the trip with other errands.
- Check the vehicle is not carrying a dangerous defect from a failed test; see MOT failures and advisories.
Is It Okay To Drive Without An MOT Certificate If The Vehicle Is New Or Exempt?
Sometimes. A new vehicle does not need its first MOT until the age GOV.UK sets for its class, and some vehicles are exempt altogether. In both cases the vehicle is not "missing" a certificate, because none is yet required. Check the exemptions rules and the MOT due date page for your vehicle.
Warning
Do not treat these exceptions as a way to keep using a car with an expired MOT. If you cannot show a pre-arranged test or repair, the exception is unlikely to help.
What May Be Invalidated Without A Current MOT Certificate?
Without a valid MOT, three things are put at risk: your ability to drive legally, your ability to renew vehicle tax, and the certainty of your insurance cover. The paper certificate itself is not what invalidates anything; the lapsed MOT is.
Driving
A fine of up to £1,000 and possible prosecution if there is no valid MOT and no exception applies.
Tax
GOV.UK says you cannot renew vehicle tax if the MOT has expired.
What Happens To Vehicle Tax Without A Valid MOT?
You cannot renew it. GOV.UK states you cannot renew vehicle tax if your MOT has expired, and suggests registering the vehicle as off the road (SORN) if the tax is about to run out. Our MOT and tax check page covers the sequence.
Can An Expired MOT Affect Insurance?
It can. GOV.UK's MOT page does not set out insurance consequences, so this depends on your policy. Some insurers treat a missing MOT as a condition of cover, and a claim can become harder. Read the wording or ask your insurer before you rely on the policy. We cannot advise on a specific policy.
Does An Expired MOT Affect Selling The Car?
It does not stop a sale, but it changes it. Buyers will expect a discount or a new test. See the section above on selling a car with an MOT certificate, and be honest about the expiry date in any advert.
What Is The Definition Of An MOT Certificate?
An MOT certificate is the document that records the result of a vehicle's MOT test. A pass certificate (VT20) shows the vehicle met the minimum road-safety and environmental standard on the test day, and it gives the expiry date for that MOT.
The "MOT" part comes from the Ministry of Transport, and the test is run in Great Britain by DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). In Northern Ireland it is the DVA (Driver and Vehicle Agency). In everyday use, people say "certificate" both for the paper and for the record behind it.
What Will The MOT Certificate Enable You To Do?
A current certificate, or rather the valid MOT it records, lets you use the vehicle on public roads, renew vehicle tax, and prove its condition to a buyer or insurer. It is not a guarantee of future reliability. The earlier section on what the certificate lets you do has more detail.
How Do I Obtain, Retrieve Or Replace An MOT Certificate?
You obtain a certificate by passing an MOT, and you retrieve or replace one through GOV.UK (free, online) or from a testing centre. Which route suits you depends on whether the MOT is still valid and where the test was done.
| What you want | Usual route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First certificate | Book and pass an MOT | Certificate issued after a pass |
| View or download a copy | GOV.UK MOT history | Registration plus the 11-digit V5C number |
| Print a copy | Download the PDF, then print | No special form needed |
| Replace a lost or damaged copy | GOV.UK replacement service | Free online; centres may charge up to £10 |
| Duplicate in Northern Ireland | NI Direct | Only while the MOT is valid |
What Do I Do If I Lose My MOT Certificate?
Stay calm: the MOT is still valid. Check the expiry date on the record, then download a copy from GOV.UK with the registration and the V5C number. If you cannot use the website, ask an MOT centre to issue a duplicate. The lost-certificate section above has the full steps.
Can I Get A Certificate If I Do Not Have The V5C?
Possibly. GOV.UK also lets some users use an MOT test number, and a centre can help in person with proof. If both fail, request a new V5C from DVLA. Check GOV.UK for the current rules rather than relying on third-party sites.
Can I View Past Or Previous MOT Certificates?
Yes, in Great Britain for recent tests. GOV.UK's MOT history service lets you download copies of current and previous certificates and see where each test was done. For cars, motorcycles and vans, GOV.UK says results go back to tests since 2005; for HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches, to tests since 2018.
Are Old MOT Certificates Available In Northern Ireland?
Only partly. GOV.UK says NI results go back to tests since 2017 and certificates cannot be downloaded there. NI Direct states a duplicate can be requested only while the MOT is valid, not for an expired one.
Why Would I Want Past MOT Certificates?
To prove service and mileage history, to support a sale, to answer a dispute, or to check earlier advisories. Buyers often get more from the pattern of past results than from the latest pass alone.
Do I Need A Paper MOT Certificate At All?
Usually not. The valid MOT is on the central record, and most buyers, insurers and employers accept a printout of the record or just the registration number. A paper copy is useful when someone insists on one, when you are offline, or when you sell privately.
Quick Guide To What You Can Do With A Certificate
| Intent | Short answer |
|---|---|
| View it | Use GOV.UK MOT history |
| Download it | Download the PDF with registration and V5C number |
| Print it | Print the PDF; no special form needed |
| Replace it | Use the free GOV.UK service, or ask a centre |
| Read it | Follow the reading order in the reading section above |
| Spot a fake | Compare the paper with the live record |
| Sell with it | Share the registration and a copy; the record is what counts |
Pro Tip
Save the PDF in cloud storage the day you pass. It costs nothing and avoids the whole replacement process next time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MOT certificate?
An MOT certificate is the record that a vehicle passed its MOT test. In DVSA guidance the pass document is called the VT20. It shows the vehicle met the minimum roadworthiness and emissions standard on the test day, and it normally stays valid for one year from the pass or from the previous expiry date.
How long is an MOT certificate valid for?
An MOT certificate is normally valid for one year. GOV.UK states that an MOT lasts for a year. If you test up to a month minus a day before expiry you keep the same renewal date, but testing earlier than that moves the next expiry to one year minus a day after the pass.
How do I get a replacement MOT certificate?
You can get a replacement free online on GOV.UK with the vehicle registration and the 11-digit V5C log book number. Alternatively, any MOT centre in Great Britain can issue one for cars, motorcycles and vans. GOV.UK says the centre can charge up to £10, so ask the price before you agree.
What details do I need for a replacement MOT certificate?
You need the registration number and the 11-digit reference from the V5C log book. As of November 2026, the GOV.UK page we checked does not list the MOT test number as a requirement for the online service. At a centre, DVSA guidance accepts the test number or V5C reference together with the registration.
Is a replacement MOT certificate free?
Yes, online. GOV.UK offers a free replacement for lost or damaged certificates through its official service. A centre may charge up to £10 for a printed copy, and heavy vehicle postal forms carry fixed payments. If a website demands a fee for the online replacement, check that you are on a gov.uk address.
How do I download my MOT certificate?
Use the GOV.UK check MOT history service, enter the registration, choose the test and download the certificate. GOV.UK says copies of current and previous certificates can be downloaded for tests in England, Scotland and Wales. Save the PDF somewhere safe so you can print or forward it whenever someone asks for proof.
How do I print my MOT certificate?
Download the certificate as a PDF from GOV.UK and print it on ordinary A4 paper. A home printout is a copy of the record rather than the record itself, so a buyer or insurer can still check the live MOT history using the registration. Print only what you need and store the PDF as well.
Can I view my MOT certificate online?
Yes, for tests carried out in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK's MOT history service lets you view and download the current and previous certificates. For Northern Ireland tests you cannot download a certificate through that service, and you should use NI Direct instead while the MOT is still valid.
Are paper MOT certificates still issued?
Yes, on request. DVSA's MOT testing guide says a test certificate must be printed through the MOT testing service when requested, and handwritten under contingency testing. We found no official statement that paper has been abolished, but many centres now email or text a copy, so ask before leaving.
Do you still get an MOT certificate?
Yes, a pass still produces a certificate that can be printed or downloaded. Many drivers do not receive paper automatically because the result is stored centrally. You can ask the centre to print one, or download it free from GOV.UK. The legal requirement is a valid MOT on record, not carrying the paper.
Do I need to carry my MOT certificate in the car?
No. The legal requirement is that the vehicle has a valid MOT, which is recorded on the central database. Police and tax systems check that record. Carrying a copy can still be handy if you are selling the car or if a buyer, employer or insurer asks for evidence of the test.
What if I lost my MOT certificate?
You have not lost the MOT, because it remains valid until its expiry date. Look up the registration on GOV.UK to confirm the expiry, then download or request a replacement only if someone needs paper. A free online replacement needs the registration and the 11-digit V5C number.
Can I drive if I lost my MOT certificate?
Yes, provided the MOT itself is valid on the central record. The law requires a valid MOT rather than the paper. If the MOT has expired, GOV.UK says you cannot drive or park on the road except to a pre-booked test or to and from repairs, and fines can reach £1,000.
What does VT20 mean?
VT20 is the DVSA form code for the MOT test certificate issued when a vehicle passes. It is the document most people mean by "MOT certificate". A VT20 can list advisories, which are notes about items that should be watched but did not justify a fail. The pass remains valid for its full period.
What does VT30 mean?
VT30 is the refusal of test certificate. DVSA guidance says it is issued when a test is refused, abandoned or aborted, or when a vehicle fails or has dangerous defects. It does not give the vehicle a valid MOT. If you receive one, you must repair the listed defects and retest before the vehicle is lawfully roadworthy.
What does VT32 mean?
According to DVSA's MOT testing guide, VT32 is an advisory notice that tells the presenter the outcome of an inspection carried out by a DVSA examiner. Some commercial sites describe it as a pass-with-advisories sheet or a retest record, but we could not verify that in official guidance, so rely on DVSA's wording.
What are CT20 and CT30 certificates?
CT20 and CT30 are the contingency testing versions of the pass and refusal documents. They are handwritten when the online testing system cannot be used. DVSA guidance says duplicates and replacements cannot be issued while a centre is operating under contingency testing, so try again once normal service resumes or use the online route.
What does an MOT certificate look like?
A typical certificate is one page showing the result, registration, make and model, colour, VIN, odometer reading, test date, expiry date and test centre. DVSA guidance also mentions the tester's signature and the country of registration. Layouts differ between paper, PDF and handwritten versions, so check the details rather than the design.
Is the VIN on an MOT certificate?
Yes. DVSA's guidance lists the VIN among the details shown. The VIN is the 17-character vehicle identification number. Compare it with the VIN on your V5C and the plate on the car. A mismatch suggests the certificate belongs to another vehicle or contains an error that should be corrected.
Is the MOT test number the same as the V5C number?
No. The MOT test number identifies one specific test, while the V5C reference is the 11-digit number on the registration certificate issued by DVLA. The online replacement service asks for the V5C number. At an MOT centre, DVSA guidance accepts either the test number or the V5C reference with the registration.
Where do I find the 11-digit V5C number?
It is printed on the V5C registration certificate, often called the log book, issued by DVLA. Look for the document reference number on the document. If you have lost the V5C, ask DVLA for a replacement first, or try a centre where you can supply the MOT test number as proof instead.
Can I get a replacement MOT certificate without the V5C?
The official online service asks for the V5C number, so you will need it for that route. At an MOT centre, DVSA guidance accepts the MOT test number as an alternative proof of entitlement, together with the registration. If you have neither, request a replacement V5C from DVLA and then use the free service.
Can any MOT centre issue a replacement certificate?
Yes for cars, motorcycles and vans in Great Britain. GOV.UK says any MOT centre can issue a replacement, not only the one that carried out the test. Bring the registration and the V5C reference. The centre can charge up to £10 and cannot issue one while operating under contingency testing.
Is there a time limit on getting a duplicate MOT certificate?
For centre-issued duplicates, yes. DVSA's testing guide says a duplicate cannot be issued more than 18 months after the test. The GOV.UK online download does not state the same limit on the page we checked, and history is held for years, so use the download for older tests.
How much is a duplicate MOT certificate?
It is free online through GOV.UK. At an MOT centre the charge can be up to £10 for cars, motorcycles and vans. GOV.UK lists £13 for HGVs and trailers using form VTG59 and £10 for public service vehicles using form VTP6. Check GOV.UK before paying because figures can change.
How do I replace a lost HGV or trailer MOT certificate?
GOV.UK says to post form VTG59 with a £13 payment. Public service vehicles use form VTP6 with a £10 payment instead. Download the current form from GOV.UK and follow its address and payment instructions, since details may change. Operators should also keep their own copies of test records.
How do I get a replacement MOT certificate in Northern Ireland?
GOV.UK says you cannot download Northern Ireland certificates through its MOT history service. If the MOT is still valid, you can apply for a duplicate on NI Direct. Duplicates are not available for expired MOTs. We have not verified an NI fee, so check NI Direct for the current charge.
Can I download an MOT certificate for a Northern Ireland test?
No, not through the GOV.UK history service. GOV.UK explains that for tests in Northern Ireland you must apply for a duplicate on NI Direct if the MOT is still valid. GOV.UK history does show NI test results from 2017, so you can at least confirm that a pass exists.
How far back does MOT history go?
GOV.UK says cars, motorcycles and vans have history since 2005, HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches since 2018, and Northern Ireland tests since 2017. Certificates for older GB tests may be available to download only within those ranges, so keep your own paperwork for anything earlier.
Can I get old or previous MOT certificates?
For tests in England, Scotland and Wales, yes. GOV.UK says you can download copies of current and previous certificates from its MOT history service. Centre duplicates are limited to 18 months after the test, so the online download is the practical route for older records. Tests before the history cut-off will not appear.
Can I check an MOT certificate is genuine?
Yes. Look up the registration on GOV.UK and compare the test date, expiry date, mileage and result with the paper. A genuine pass will appear in the record. If the paper shows details that the record does not, treat it as a warning sign and ask the seller to explain before you pay.
How can I spot a fake MOT certificate?
Check the registration online first, since a genuine pass will match the record. Then look for alterations, mismatched details, an unknown test centre and a seller who refuses an online check. A VIN that differs from the car or the V5C is another red flag. When in doubt, walk away.
What is a ghost MOT certificate?
A ghost MOT is a fraud in which a pass is recorded, or a certificate issued, without the vehicle being properly tested. It is illegal and dangerous because the car may be unsafe. Buyers can reduce the risk by checking that the history shows a plausible mileage, a real centre and a sensible test pattern.
Can I change the wrong mileage on an MOT certificate?
Yes, if it is a recording error. Contact the testing centre, explain the mistake and supply evidence such as a service invoice with the correct mileage. DVSA guidance says an amended test record leads to a free replacement certificate. If the centre will not act, raise it with DVSA through GOV.UK.
What if my MOT certificate has the wrong registration?
Contact the testing centre straight away and ask for the record to be corrected. A wrong registration can attach the test to another vehicle's history, which can affect other keepers. DVSA guidance says a corrected record produces a free replacement certificate showing who changed it. Escalate to DVSA if you get no response.
Does a failed MOT produce a certificate?
It produces a refusal of test certificate, the VT30, which lists the defects. It is not a pass and gives no valid MOT. DVSA guidance says a VT30 is issued when a test is refused, abandoned or aborted, or when the vehicle fails or has dangerous defects. Repair and retest before relying on the car.
Does a retest give me a new certificate?
A pass at retest gives you a normal VT20 with the pass date and a new expiry. The earlier failed attempt stays in the history. If you tested early, check the early-test rule, because the expiry date may not follow your old renewal date. Our due date page explains the arithmetic.
Do advisories make an MOT certificate invalid?
No. A pass with advisories is still a pass and the certificate is valid for its full period. Advisories are notes about items that may need attention soon. Treat them as a to-do list, fix them on your own schedule and keep the invoices to show a future buyer you acted.
Do I need an MOT certificate to tax my car?
You need a valid MOT, which is checked centrally, if the vehicle requires one. GOV.UK says you cannot renew vehicle tax while the MOT has expired. You do not normally have to produce paper when taxing online. If tax is about to run out, you can declare the vehicle off the road with a SORN.
Can I sell a car without an MOT certificate?
Generally yes, if you are honest about the situation, but the vehicle cannot normally be driven on the road without a valid MOT other than to a pre-booked test or repairs. A buyer will usually want a test or a lower price. Our rules page explains what is allowed when selling.
Is an MOT certificate proof of insurance?
No. An MOT certificate shows a test result and has nothing to do with insurance cover. Insurers may ask whether the vehicle has a valid MOT, and a lapsed MOT can complicate a claim depending on the policy. Read your policy wording or ask your insurer, because outcomes differ.
What is a temporary MOT certificate?
There is no official temporary MOT certificate that extends validity. The phrase is used loosely for printouts, duplicates or handwritten contingency documents. If a seller offers a "temporary" paper as proof of a valid MOT, verify the registration on GOV.UK instead, because the central record is what counts.
What is a contingency MOT certificate?
A contingency certificate is a handwritten CT20 or CT30 used when a testing centre cannot use the online system. The result is entered into the system afterwards. DVSA guidance says duplicates and replacements cannot be issued during contingency testing, and that centres retain contingency forms for a short period.
What is an MOT exemption certificate?
There is no certificate you collect to be exempt. GOV.UK explains that certain vehicles, such as some historic ones, do not need an MOT and the keeper declares the exemption when taxing the vehicle. Check the conditions on GOV.UK or on our rules and exemptions page before relying on an exemption.
Does the MOT stay with the car when I sell it?
Yes. The MOT belongs to the vehicle, not the keeper, so a change of keeper does not cancel it. The new keeper can see the same history. Vehicle tax is different because it does not transfer to the new keeper, so the buyer must tax the vehicle in their own name.
Can I keep a digital copy instead of paper?
Yes. A PDF downloaded from GOV.UK is as useful as paper for most purposes, and the live record is what enforcement uses. Store the PDF in cloud storage with a clear filename containing the registration and expiry date, and keep a copy on your phone for quick sharing.
How long should I keep my MOT certificates?
We cannot verify an official keeping period for private owners. DVSA retention rules apply to testing centres, not to you. A sensible habit is to keep the current certificate and the previous one with your vehicle paperwork, and download older ones from GOV.UK whenever you need them.
Can anyone look up my MOT history?
Yes. GOV.UK's history service works from the registration number, so anyone who knows it can check the test results and mileage. The V5C number is only needed to see where a test was done. Do not publish your V5C number in an advert or online post.
Does the MOT certificate show who owns the car?
No. A certificate shows the vehicle and the test, not the keeper's name. It contains the registration and VIN, which link to the vehicle's history. Take care when posting photos of documents online, because the registration allows others to view the vehicle's MOT history.
Why does my website replacement attempt fail?
The usual causes are a mistyped registration, a V5C number entered with a letter O instead of a zero, or a recent change of keeper with a new V5C. Recheck the details. If it still fails, ask an MOT centre to issue a copy using the registration and test number.
Can I get a same-day MOT certificate copy?
Usually yes. The online route gives an immediate download once you enter the correct details, and many centres can print a duplicate while you wait if their system is working. We could not verify any official service-level time, so treat claims about delivery times elsewhere with caution.
What should I do if I disagree with the result on my certificate?
If you disagree with a fail or a defect, there are appeal routes through DVSA, covered on our failures and advisories page. If the problem is an error such as the wrong mileage or colour, ask the centre to amend the record and issue a free replacement certificate.
Who can issue a duplicate MOT certificate?
Any MOT testing centre in Great Britain can issue a duplicate for cars, motorcycles and vans if you prove entitlement, and the online GOV.UK service issues them free. Heavy vehicles use postal forms to DVSA. In Northern Ireland, duplicates are applied for through NI Direct while the MOT is valid.
Is the GovMotCheck site able to issue my certificate?
No. GovMotCheck is an independent information site and is not affiliated with DVSA, DVLA, DVA or GOV.UK. We cannot access your records or issue certificates. Use the official GOV.UK service for replacements and downloads, and treat any site that charges for the same service with caution.
How do I check whether my car has a valid MOT certificate?
Enter the registration into GOV.UK's MOT history service or into our MOT history check. It shows the latest result, the expiry date and the mileage. This is more reliable than paper, because it reads the central record that the police and tax systems use.
When is it legal to drive without an MOT certificate?
It is legal to drive without the paper if the MOT itself is valid on the record. Without a valid MOT, GOV.UK says the only exceptions are driving to or from a repair and driving to a pre-arranged MOT test. Otherwise you can be fined up to £1,000 and prosecuted.
What may be invalidated without a current MOT certificate?
The risk is to your right to drive legally, your ability to renew vehicle tax and, depending on the policy wording, your insurance. GOV.UK says you cannot renew tax if the MOT has expired. Check your insurer's terms, because we cannot advise on a specific policy.
Is it okay to drive without an MOT certificate if I have lost the paper?
Yes, provided the MOT is still valid on the central record. The law requires a valid MOT rather than a printout. You can confirm the expiry date online with the registration number and download a replacement copy from GOV.UK if you need one.
What will the MOT certificate enable you to do?
A valid MOT lets you use the vehicle on public roads, renew vehicle tax and show a buyer or insurer that it passed the test. It does not guarantee the vehicle will stay roadworthy, because it only records the condition on the test day.
What is the definition of an MOT certificate?
An MOT certificate is the document recording the result of a vehicle's MOT test. A pass certificate, called a VT20, shows the vehicle met the minimum road-safety and environmental standards on the day and gives the expiry date. People also use the phrase for the online record.
How do I retrieve an MOT certificate?
Use GOV.UK's MOT history or replacement service with the registration number and the 11-digit V5C number, then download the PDF. If that fails, an MOT centre can issue a duplicate. Northern Ireland certificates are requested through NI Direct while the MOT is valid.
How do I obtain an MOT certificate for the first time?
You obtain one by passing an MOT test at an authorised centre. The certificate is issued after a pass, and the result is stored on the central record. New vehicles need their first MOT at the age GOV.UK sets for their class.
Can I see past MOT certificates?
Yes, for Great Britain. GOV.UK says you can download current and previous certificates from the MOT history service, which covers cars, motorcycles and vans from 2005 and heavier vehicles from 2018. Northern Ireland certificates cannot be downloaded there.
Do I need a paper MOT certificate to sell my car?
No, a paper copy is not essential. Buyers can check the live record using the registration number. Handing over a printed copy or PDF is still good practice, and it helps if the buyer has no internet access at the viewing.
Can I view my MOT certificate on my phone?
Yes. The GOV.UK services work in a mobile browser, and you can save the downloaded PDF to your phone. Keep the file somewhere you can reach easily, and check it against the live record before you rely on it.
What should I do if I find an error or suspect a fake certificate?
Compare the paper with the live record using the registration and the VIN. If the details differ, contact the test centre about a correction, which should bring a free replacement. If you suspect a fake, do not buy and report it to DVSA through GOV.UK.
